Summary
The story of FF7 if Zack lived.
Shortly after being ambushed outside of Midgar, Zack and Cloud were separated: Zack remained under Turk care, while Cloud - confused from mako poisoning - went missing somewhere on the streets of Midgar. Now Zack has to somehow find his best friend before Shinra and Hojo can, not to mention that he has to stay under the radar himself - but with the Turks keeping secrets from him, and with so many reminders of his previous four years of being a lab experiment, staying anonymous is becoming more and more difficult.
Meanwhile, Cloud has literally stumbled into Tifa's care. Given his mako-enhanced eyes, it doesn't take long for him to be recruited into Avalanche... but it's quickly becoming apparent that he's not the strong, sturdy SOLDIER that he'd like everyone to think. His memories are disjointed and his mind feels foggy, to the point that it becomes difficult to tell what's real and what's not. But Tifa needs him. He made a promise to her after all, and he intends to keep that promise... no matter what it takes.

Cloud hallucinates. Voices sometimes, or music -- it's hard to tell. It's just another consequence of Jenova's encroaching presence in his DNA, and four years after Meteorfall everyone's more or less adapted to it and other oddities associated with being not quite human. Mostly.
What begins as a chance encounter with something that isn't Jenova soon leads to a fight for survival that can no longer be contained in the spaces between numbers, as Cloud tries to keep himself together and finally put his past behind him.

You develop a fear of the veiled followers - the ones who serve to "purify" and "correct" you for paradise - and are disturbed to realize the only comforting presence inside Mint Eye is your abductor: Saeran. Can you escape and find your way back to reality? Will he come with you?

“Great! So it’s fine!” The chipper tone in Ventus’ voice sounds a little forced, but Isa welcomes it all the same, hoping to leech some of that positive energy from his co-worker and friend. “Don’t be awkward!”
An echo of footsteps in the courtyard draws Isa’s attention, and he looks up just in time to see Lea jog down the stairs towards him. Today’s hawaiian shirt is a garish yellow, sporting a repeating pattern of dolphins jumping over a curling blue and white wave, and the sleeves are artfully torn off. Isa grimaces.

The driver shouted and spun off the road; the guard in the front seat turned back to look at Ignis and Noctis. And then she was crushed, along with the entire front of the car in a smash of glass and snake scales, and the car went spinning and screaming.
Then, terrible silence.
For a single heartbeat, Ignis sat dazed in the smashed car with his ears ringing oddly and his head wet (why was it wet?), breathing in air that tasted like metal. He turned his head (why was that hard?) towards Noctis.
Noct was impossibly angled towards the middle of the car, which had crumpled on top of him from the side. They locked eyes for a single, horrified moment, so that Noct’s white face and wide eyes were the last thing Ignis saw before steel blades stabbed through the car with a rust-throated scream.

Axel wanted to be a hero, but war has never been the same as the stories. After an incident left him unwilling to be a pilot, he left the program behind. But the war has not ended and Axel is drawn back, back to the war and back to Isa.

Just leave him behind.” The man next to her said nothing and that guy who looked like him kept his head down, his eyes darting back and forth. The trio walks away, following the woman’s lead and catching up with the King. Axel makes a grunting sound.
