Summary
Dave is living in a small village with his twin sister, Rose, and their guardian, Broderick. Financially, they live a very nice and comfortable life since Broderick's business in sword making has become quite popular. Yet, life is anything but comfortable for the twins, Dave is constantly being prepared to be "a man with status" while Rose isn't even treated as a person.
The world has been gray for a while and a looming, always stormy, castle barely haunts the town. When Broderick takes Dave past the castle, his mind becomes filled with impossible memories because, after all, the castle had always been that way. Decaying and snowy.

To anyone not involved, it seems obvious that Kanaya should go and take care of that mess, not only because she's the one who takes care of messes anyway, but because it's Space-related, and even though they wished the game was behind them, it always finds a way to sneak back into their lives and make them play by its rules.

When Dave Strider moves from Texas to cold, rainy Washington, he isn't that bothered. He had some people he wanted to leave behind at his old middle school anyway. And it's a pleasant surprise when he discovers that the friends he's made over Pesterchum turn out to go to the same new high school as him. There's even a stranger in a loose sweater and skater skirt shouting about social justice who turns his head. But Dave's been hiding something from his friends: he has ulcerative colitis, which means "painful inflamed large intestine" and is about as fun as it sounds. And it is a lot harder to be cool when your own body won't work right.
I'm not going to be super graphic in my descriptions of Dave's illness, but a warning before you open this: colitis involves being physically sick, and not of the "throwing up" brand. So again, I won't be getting too graphic, but it's going to be present and some element of detail is unavoidable.
