Summary
“Chris?” Eddie asks, turning away from the stove only to see Chris wearing his headphones at the kitchen table. “Chris!” he calls out and waits for Chris to free up an ear. “Did you hear me?”
“Something about Buck?” Chris guesses. “What is it now?”
Eddie has no idea where this kid gets his sass from.
“I wanted your opinion,” Eddie responds, pointing his spatula at Chris, “on whether or not you think Buck might have feelings for me? Because I’m trying to decide if I should say something to him or not.”
Chris pulls his headphones off fully, placing them on the table.
“About your big gay crush?” Chris asks, looking for clarification.
Eddie rolls his eyes and nods. “Sure, my ‘big gay crush’.”
“I don’t know why you don’t just show him the tattoo,” Chris replies. “I’m pretty sure he’ll be able to figure it out from there.”

“I can’t just—oh, holy shit,” Buck says through a laugh.
“What?” Eddie asks, contorting himself to try and follow Buck’s line of sight. “What is it?”
Buck physically manhandles him so that he’s looking in the right direction and discreetly points towards the aisle.
“Are those little helicopters hanging off the pews,” Buck asks in horror.
Eddie is equally horrified, for the record.
“We’d never have something that trashy at our wedding,” he says without thinking.
Buck freezes next to him. “At our wedding?”
*
(Eddie accidentally makes a comment about his and Buck’s future wedding. Buck doesn’t even know Eddie’s gay.)

Summary
So today, Eddie is angry. It turns white and flaring in the moment that he turns and looks at Tommy, incredulity warring with fury in the hollow of his chest on Buck’s behalf.
“You gave me Ibuprofen?” Buck asks.
His voice is kind of small. Eddie can’t look at him. But that means that he is looking at Tommy when his face turns— senselessly— indignant, his gray eyes flashing in Buck’s direction.alternate scene from "masks", in which eddie works out what buck's boils are really from.

Summary
In an effort to make Buck stay, Eddie has him blacklisted by every landlord in Los Angeles.
---
The first time it happens, Eddie doesn’t know what comes over him. It’s like he’s possessed.
His phone rings while he’s folding laundry, pairing together two of Buck’s dog-themed socks when he answers and hears, “Hi, is this Eddie Diaz?”
“Yes,” he responds.
“Hi, this is Claire Thornton with Thornton & Duncan Realty, I’m calling for a reference for Mr. Evan Buckley? He’s applied to one of our properties recently, so we’re reaching out before approval,” the woman on the other end of the line says.
Eddie’s stomach drops. Then the possession happens. “Oh, uh. Evan Buckley. Right.”
Claire chuckles. “That doesn’t sound like a great start.”
“I- listen. He’s a good guy, but an awful tenant,” Eddie feels like he’s watching himself from outside his body as the words leave his mouth. What is he doing?

“I just don’t see what the big deal is,” Chimney says, joining them at the table. “Why don’t you just go on the trip, Buck? Take Eddie. We can get your shifts covered, it’s, what—three nights?”
“The big deal,” Buck says in exasperation, slamming his fork down, “is that it’s a couples retreat. For couples.”
“And?” Chimney raises his eyebrows, still not buying it.
“And I entered the giveaway when Tommy and I were still together!” Buck snaps. ”I don’t want t-to—it would just feel weird, okay? It’s supposed to be all—like, romantic. Flower petals on the bed and stuff.”
Buck and Eddie take a romantic getaway. Platonically.

“Eddie,” someone says, low and soothing around the gasp that tangles in his throat.
And then there are fingers on his shoulders and Eddie turns in time to watch his husband’s sweet, soft, concerned expression illuminate with a fresh, blush flash of lightning outside.

There’s mud on his hands. There’s mud on his hands and he has to dig deeper, quicker, because Eddie is forty feet beneath him and surely he can’t breathe because the well is gone and Eddie is gone and Buck can’t follow him.
“Eddie,” his throat feels raw, the words wrong to his ears, “Eddie.”
“Yeah,” Eddie says, holding onto him, “I'm right here, Buck, I’m right here.”
“I can’t—” Buck breaks off, his trembling, dirty hand in the air and Eddie must understand because he takes Buck's hand without question and pulls it to his chest, right over his heart.

Summary
He turns to go check out the bathroom, and that’s when he sees it.
The shower… You can see directly into it from the bed.
Eddie picks up a pillow and chucks it at Buck’s head.
“What was that for?!” Buck sits up, and Eddie points at the shower.
“Why would they make the shower like that? You can see into it from here!” Eddie exasperates.
Eddie can see the wheels in Buck’s head turning.
“You know, I’ve heard of these types of showers before. When you get in and turn on the water, it frosts over so no one can see in from the outside!” Buck says matter of factly.
Eddie nods, traces of doubt still showing on his face.
“Alright… I’m gonna let you be the test subject in that case.”
Buck laughs and says “Ok, Eddie.”Or:

“It’s… It’s like I said,” Buck says and his eyes are definitely wet now. “I want you. And you made yourself clear. I can’t have you. I understand. Can I at least help Christopher with his homework? I promised him.”
Eddie stares at him and he doesn’t know how he missed the signs; probably because they sneaked in on him. Buck’s dilated pupils, even now in distress, his lip chewed red and puffy, his blue eyes intense as they move from Eddie’s eyes to his lips.
Wherein Buck takes the leap and lands hard.
Wherein Eddie regrets not breaking the fall.

Summary
“Up until a few minutes ago, you were my straight best friend.”
“And?” Eddie asks incredulously. “So what?”
“I didn’t wanna be that guy!” Buck insists. “You know; bisexual guy who’s hopelessly pining for his straight best friend?”
Eddie narrows his eyes. “Oh, so straight me wasn’t good enough for you? Ouch.”
Buck chokes on air.
“That is not what I said,” Buck insists, pointing a finger at Eddie.

“I feel fucking explosive, Buck. Like I’m about to go off at any second. I don’t want you caught in my mess.”
His eyes sting. At the very least, Buck contains the sound of it in his voice. “Eddie, I don’t know if you’ve noticed,” he replies, “but I already am.”
Eddie self-implodes. Christopher, seeking refuge, flees to Buck—whose priorities amount to, in varying order: take in the kid, get Eddie to talk to him, and keep the three of them afloat in the process. (Oh, and Tommy’s there too. He thinks.)

“Which do you think makes you feel most loved?”
Eddie thought for a long moment. Too long, maybe. Then he shrugged, “Honestly, Buck? I have no idea.”
Buck’s brows pinched up. “What do you mean? When have you felt the most loved?”
“Don’t make a big thing of this, Buck. Promise?”
Buck made a show of crossing his heart, brows still raised curiously.
“I’m not sure I’ve ever… really felt loved in a relationship? I’m not convinced that I know what makes me feel loved…”

After finding out that Eddie doesn't know what his love language is, Buck sets about finding out for him. He begins a five week experiment, one for each love language, to figure out which will make Eddie feel the most loved.

“Hey!” Buck says brightly, completely oblivious to Eddie’s irritation. His voice is filled with excitement as he continues. “Did you know that the ancient Greeks used tattoos to communicate among spies? They—”
“You didn’t do the dishes,” Eddie interrupts, not trying to hide or sugarcoat his annoyance. He’s fucking tired of this. He asked Buck to do one thing, and instead of doing it, Buck apparently went on another research binge.
Buck looks almost surprised when his eyes land on the dirty dishes, like he completely forgot they were there.
“Oh,” he says, huffing a small laugh. “Right. I got a little distracted. I’ll do them in a minute.”
“Will you?” Eddie asks with a bitter scoff, and Buck reels back slightly, clearly not having expected that reaction.
“I— Yes, I will,” Buck insists, and Eddie can’t help but scoff again.

Eddie—gulps, looking at him, because Buck doesn’t—he doesn’t look bothered, but he doesn’t look like he’s going to get up and finish the job, either. They’re at a standstill. The air in the room feels less like pops of static and more like a heavy cover of humidity. Their eyes won’t meet.
“Uh,” Eddie manages, pointing to the door. Buck’s eyes are still somewhere past Eddie. “We should get back out there, huh?”
“Yeah,” Buck says.
…or, Buck and Eddie almost kiss. Things go about as well as you would expect them to go.

“Look, you’re my family, a-and I want you guys to be on board with this.” Buck is tense, anxious. Eddie should really say something. Be supportive. “But it’s happening either way. So.”
Bobby leans over to clap Buck on the shoulder, staring him straight in the eye as he does. “I am happy for you, Buck. As long as you’re sure.”
Some of the tension falls away from Buck’s posture. He smiles. “I am. Sure. I’m super sure.”
“Alright then.” Bobby pats Buck’s shoulder once more before he pulls away. “Congratulations, kid.” Buck visibly exhales in relief, which Eddie finds solace in despite the fact that he’s currently being stabbed with a thousand tiny knives.
Or: Buck is getting married. He is.

Summary
Buck supposes in a way, he’s always been a little obsessive.
When a thought grips him—a fear—he’s rarely able to let go of it again. It digs its little claws into his brain and makes a home inside his head until eventually, it relents and loosens its hold. Sometimes, it’s only to make room for a new fear. Other times, it simply disappears on its own.
It’s just something he’s learned to live with—something he can live with.
And then he gets struck by lightning.

Summary
So in the middle of Eddie’s dining room, with his brain to mouth filter non-existent (as per usual), Buck blurts out, “Marry me.”
Eddie sits straight up, looking at him with eyes wide as saucers.
“Excuse me?”
“W-well, just think about it. If we get married I can add you and Chris to my insurance policy and that solves your problem.”
Eddie’s mouth forms a perfect little ‘o’. Buck waits patiently for the floor to open up and swallow him whole.
When the ground doesn’t do as he’d hoped he realizes he has to say something else. “Obviously, w-we don’t have to,” he’s quick to assure. “But if we did it would be platonic, of course, because you’re straight and–” he pauses, praying for another rogue stroke of lightning. Anything to put him out of his misery right now. “-and like I know that I’m bi now, but this wouldn’t be like that y’know? It would just be two friends helping each other out.” He’s rambling, the words won’t stop tumbling out. “Like a friends with benefits type situation! E-except you know not those kinds of benefits! Like actual benefits! Health and dental.”

“I don’t own a house. Buck was subletting for me.”
“Right… and still paying rent at his own place?”
“Well, no.”
“You guys have been living together?”
“Yes.”
“So let me see if I got this. You guys are living together, were close enough during the pandemic as to spend the holidays together and not get infected, are attached at the hip, and refer to each other as partners–”
“Buck’s also Chris’ legal guardian if something ever happens to me.”
“That’s literally the gayest thing I’ve ever heard and I’m literally dating a woman.”
