For his entire life Tyler had had this sneaking suspicion that he’d missed something somewhere along the line – a day at kindergarten or a book that children were supposed to read in their early years – and that he had as a result not learned how exactly how he was supposed to be a human being.
He had felt all of these feelings for so long that they had become a cosmic background drone in his life, a fact as undeniable as gravity – he was an apple that had fallen out of the only tree in the world that produced floating apples. Tyler Joseph was an anomaly, and everybody knew it, and everybody pretended that they didn’t but they all secretly hoped that he’d figure it out one day and do something sudden and drastic to fix it and become a working member of a society they all secretly despised.

It’s 1966, and from a listening post atop a man-made hill in West Berlin, conscripted signal analyst Tyler Joseph spends his days buried in dots and dashes. He’s so alone, bored, and alienated that when a jazz song with a very peculiar drumbeat creeps into his airwaves, transmitted from beyond the wall, Tyler wonders if he’s found someone else out there who understands him.

Between crowded greenrooms, stolen touches, too many feelings, and way too little sleep, Tyler finds out that being on tour doesn’t just bring new challenges, it also stirs up pieces of his past he thought he’d buried a long time ago.
