In an alternate timeline where there was no big leap into the future for the crew of the Discovery but the battle still saw Control defeated, Hugh Culber went through with his plan to join the crew of the Enterprise. It put him one step nearer to what had so far been his life dream and the goal of his career, to become the CMO of one of the big Constitution class ships.
