Summary
"Hey, Lizzie?"
Lizzie stopped mid-swipe, her hand pausing on the cloth. She looked up, her expression focusing entirely on Gem.
"Do you have a minute?" Gem asked softly, shifting her hands into her apron pockets. "Can we talk in your office?"
Lizzie didn't glance at her watch, nor did she check the floor behind them. She simply set the brush down on the counter, wiped her hands on her apron, and nodded once. "Yeah. Of course."

Summary
Pearl opened her mouth.
"I..."
Nothing. The word evaporated before it could become anything. Her jaw tightened, a small, private flash of frustration at herself, at her own inability to do this one simple thing.
She closed her mouth again.
The room was quiet around her. Gem wasn't moving to filling the silence, just waiting. Pearl could feel that patience like a hand held out without pressure.
Her fingers uncurled, slowly, one at a time.
She looked up.
Gem's eyes were right there, steady and present. Pearl held them for a second, found the clinical register she needed.
"I have partial androgen insensitivity syndrome. It is an intersex condition."

Summary
"Whoa—" Gem caught her fully, both arms coming around her at once, Pearl's weight suddenly heavier and less steady than a second ago. "Hey. Hey, I've got you, I've got you."
Pearl's fingers didn't loosen, if anything they gripped harder. Gem could feel her trembling, and her eyes had gone wide in a way Gem had never seen on her before. She was scared, like some old animal part of her flinching away from the loss of control before the rest of her could catch up.
Gem's chest ached looking at it.
//Who did this to you?

Summary
"Not everything is yours to fix Pearl." The words come out harder than Gem intended.
"Then what is this even about because right now it feels like—"
"Like what Pearl, what does it feel like—"
"Like you can't even breathe around me—"
"I can't—" The words rip out of Gem before she's caught up to them.

Summary
"How'd you meet?"
"Uhm." The word just sat there.
Roommates. We were roommates. Just say—
"Roommates," Gem said blankly.Pearl glanced over. Something in her expression shifted, and then she was already talking, smooth and easy, filling the space Gem had left.
"Housing assigned us together in third year. I don't think either of us expected it to go this way but—" she made a small gesture, half a shrug, "—here we are."

Summary
"How do you know," she said, more slowly, "when you're doing something for yourself. As opposed to for someone else."
Gem looked at her. The question landing without apparent weight on Gem's end, just something to consider.
"I follow what I'm actually interested in," she said. "If I'm dreading it, it's usually not for me." She shrugged slightly. "Or if I keep waiting for someone to notice I'm doing it. That's usually a sign."
She said it cleanly. Thought, it wasn't a complicated question from where she was sitting.
Pearl nodded once.
She looked at the table for a moment.
"I… don't really know who I am," she said, "if I'm not useful."

Summary
Gem left.
The door closed behind her. There was the sound of her footsteps moving away, and then nothing.
Pearl stayed alone in the room.
After a moment she reached down and pulled the sheet up over herself, tucking it around her shoulders, and sat there in bedroom surrounded by the smell of baked spruce and ash. She tried not to think too hard, but something refused to leave her.

Summary
“Thanks for coming on short notice.”
He glanced at her like the statement was nonsense. “Well yeah? You texted.”She rolled her eyes faintly. It steadied her more than she’d admit.
He twisted the lid off his coffee and took a cautious sip, wincing at the heat. Pearl watched the steam curl between them before looking back out at the quad.
“So,” he said, casual. “You wanted to ask me about Gem?”
