Lizzie stopped mid-swipe, her hand pausing on the cloth. She looked up, her expression focusing entirely on Gem.
"Do you have a minute?" Gem asked softly, shifting her hands into her apron pockets. "Can we talk in your office?"
Lizzie didn't glance at her watch, nor did she check the floor behind them. She simply set the brush down on the counter, wiped her hands on her apron, and nodded once. "Yeah. Of course."

Pearl opened her mouth.
"I..."
Nothing. The word evaporated before it could become anything. Her jaw tightened, a small, private flash of frustration at herself, at her own inability to do this one simple thing.
She closed her mouth again.
The room was quiet around her. Gem wasn't moving to filling the silence, just waiting. Pearl could feel that patience like a hand held out without pressure.
Her fingers uncurled, slowly, one at a time.
She looked up.
Gem's eyes were right there, steady and present. Pearl held them for a second, found the clinical register she needed.
"I have partial androgen insensitivity syndrome. It is an intersex condition."

"Whoa—" Gem caught her fully, both arms coming around her at once, Pearl's weight suddenly heavier and less steady than a second ago. "Hey. Hey, I've got you, I've got you."
Pearl's fingers didn't loosen, if anything they gripped harder. Gem could feel her trembling, and her eyes had gone wide in a way Gem had never seen on her before. She was scared, like some old animal part of her flinching away from the loss of control before the rest of her could catch up.
Gem's chest ached looking at it.
