It only stings a little when Steve leans in one night and kisses Nancy by the firelight. Eddie’s used to being in pain, anyway, and it’s nice to have the ache come from someplace different, variety being the spice of life. He thinks he does a decent job at keeping his expression neutral, but Robin reaches out and hooks their pinkies together, such a small, conciliatory gesture, he knows she’s got his number. Maybe she’s feeling the same ache, too.

They come back from that horrible party and Stede gets the distinct impression that Edward doesn’t want to be his friend. At least, not just his friend. Even though it’s been a while, he can recognize it now, the look in Ed’s eye—nervous anticipation, desire.
They’re on the deck, the moon high above them, and it’s certainly not an unromantic evening. Stede’s heart beats a little faster.
“Goodnight,” Ed says, and takes half a step closer.

“Tea in its natural state,” Stede says. “You don’t have to drink it. I didn’t really ask you here for tea.”
Ed hunches like a child, but his hair and stubble is grey as a silverfish. He sounds as bitter as the tea when he says, “What did you really ask me here for, then?”
Or: Stede comes back to Edward. They both look for forgiveness, and relief.

My word, that is just—well, a poor example of parenting, if you ask me.” He rocked the sobbing babe in his arms, his eyes trained on Ed. “We should have the crew pick this house over very thoroughly. Serves them right, abandoning a little baby. I think I saw a silver service in the kitchen; make sure they nab that.”
