Will is pretty sure he’s supposed to be dead right now.
Not in like, a depressing way or anything. It’s shocking, but even with all that he’s gone through, he’s actually doing alright mentally for once. His connection with Vecna has been silent for months, he’s been spending time with his family and friends, and he has a boyfriend. A boyfriend who he has a three month anniversary celebration with in less than a week, by the way. And don’t get Will wrong, he is extremely excited. How could he not be? He gets to date Mike, the boy who he’s been attached at the hip with since he was five. The only issue is, well, he can’t very much attend their anniversary movie night if he’s, you know, dead.
Will may be mistaken, but he’s pretty sure the demodog that was charging at him should have ripped his insides out about thirty seconds ago.

And then Pietro came along, shattering not only his cell but his very reality in the process. A hand on his arm. Another curled up in his hair. A touch that didn’t carry pain, but hope, and freedom, and something that felt dangerously close to safety.
Erik’s skin tingled long after Pietro had pulled his hands away, and he realised how deeply he had missed such gentle contact.
He learnt very quickly, however, that Pietro did not feel the same.

With that, Mike comes to the swift realization that he wants nothing more than to be with— to be there with Will, even if he’s a couple of states away from him. I mean, he can’t just let Will go through that alone. It would be torture. Honestly, for both him and for Will.
This revelation is what makes Mike decide he’s going to comfort Will, whether it be through a shitty house phone, or a letter with several crossed out words and sentences.
Which is why Mike finds himself going to dial The Byers Household on his house phone, in his basement, at an ungodly hour.
