Summary
Everyone knew that Kenny McCormick was the poorest kid in town. They could crack jokes about it all they wanted, he really didn’t care, but most of them had no idea what really went on behind closed doors. They were all able to live semi-normal lives while Kenny had to work for every little thing he had and to help support his little sister however he could. It was exhausting and he was getting really fucking sick of it.
While Butters’ family may not be poor, that didn’t mean that life at home was all fine and dandy for him either. It was like constantly walking on eggshells, being hyper vigilant about every move he made and every word that came out of his mouth. He hated it, but what could he do? Honestly, he could only keep doing his best to stay on his parent’s good side and do what he was told. Anything to avoid negative consequences.
Neither of them knew what they were doing except whatever they could in order to survive in a world that only ever seemed to be against them. Maybe it was possible that they could eventually learn to survive together.

Once or twice, when Henry was young, he wondered how it would feel, to be hugged, as he watched his parents hug his little sister. He quickly abandoned such nonsense -- the desire to be held -- when he grew older.
He didn't need hugs, stopped wanting them, even before he became Peter Ballard. He certainly didn't need one, and would most definitely never receive one, as a monster haunting the Upside Down.
The thing is, life worked in a funny way sometimes. Who would've thought he'd have his first hug after he became a literal monster?
Vecna got a hug, and no, his first hug wasn't when he posed as Max's mom. It was way before that.

One moment, he and Mike were getting ready to strike the core of Vecna's power, both of their hands grasping the handle of the spear Eddie had gotten them from God-knows-where.
The next...they were shoved to the side with a shout of their names.
Will landed on the harsh, cold stone ground of the Upside Down. His arm started to bleed almost instantly, while Mike had hit his head on a rock and fell unconsious next to him. The boy turned to shake him awake, only for his eyes to catch something horrific happening before his very eyes.
Jonathan had been the one to push them down.
He was now standing above them. In front of the core.

“I still can’t believe this,” Will mumbles, more to himself than Mike. Mike hears him anyway and gives him a dark look. Will raises his hands in surrender. “Okay, okay! We’re here. What’s your grand plan, Paladin?”
Mike’s expression melts into something soft, just for a moment. Maybe it’s a trick of the light. “I was hoping for your guidance, Will the Wise,” he responds, turning to face Troy’s house again. Will can hear the smile in his voice.
“No! No way,” Will replies, laughing. “You tell me what the plan is. I know you have one.”
He does. Of course. And when Mike tells him his plan, Will has to clap a hand over his mouth to keep from cackling and waking up the neighborhood. “Jesus, Wheeler. You’re devious.”
“Don’t forget it, Byers.”
