She turned onto her side.
Her eyes drifted—inevitably—toward the door.
Just beyond it, in the hallway, was his. She didn’t need to see it to picture it perfectly.
The star chain hanging from the handle. The faint, delicate clinking it made whenever someone brushed past. It was such a small, unnecessary detail—something most people wouldn’t bother with—but it suited him so well it almost hurt.
Her fingers tightened slightly in the blanket.
“…It’s only been two days,” she muttered under her breath, her voice barely audible.
She pressed her face into her pillow for a moment, as if that might somehow push the feeling away, but it lingered—persistent and stubborn.
It wasn’t like she hadn’t been alone before.

Kohane wondered, briefly, how they ended up here.
It wasn’t unusual for Kohane and An to get into some sort of strange mishap. An adventure was what An always called it. Sometimes they hopped on a train, expecting one stop but ending up on the opposite side of the city. Or they’d find a completely new shop, deciding to go for a detour.
Kohane felt that it was like she was meeting An for the first time again on every one of these. In an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar faces, her heart would be pounding before her eyes landed on An’s. And she’d smile, inviting her on a journey that Kohane didn’t know she was missing out on.or; kohane is really really down bad and only realized it now

This is far from the first time Kohane has spent the night at An’s. In fact, she does it whenever her parents allow it; staying at An’s apartment above Weekend Garage is much safer than walking all the way home on event nights, is her usual excuse. They’re both used to it, a comfortable atmosphere built in the shared space; Kohane knows An’s bedroom almost as well as her own. Tonight is another of these nights. A warm end to the day, one that should be routine, void of any butterflies in her chest or nagging thoughts at the back of her mind. Tonight should be no different than usual.
…Well. A few words exchanged at the back of a live house a few weeks ago, and the kiss that accompanied them, the change from singing partners to girlfriends… that’s enough to warrant anxiety, Kohane thinks, as An leads her up to her bedroom.

Unfortunately, she can't really avoid hiding that anymore when she gets sick and her parents are gone to visit family for the week. An decides she'll care for Kohane. Unfortunately (unfortunately-er?) Kohane spent the rest of her sane rational thought on the act of texting with An and was totally delirious by the time An arrived. Yikes! Harumichi walks in, and Toya’s eyes sharply flicker away; he must look a sorry state, he doesn’t want to see… whatever his father is thinking about him right now. He remains silent, waiting for the coming berating.
Footsteps thump towards his bed. He curls into himself, cowering away from it.
Something cold touches his injured cheek; Toya flinches a little, taking a moment to process.
It’s a cold pack, paper towels carefully wrapped around it to give a layer between the freezing surface and his skin. Toya barely manages to catch it as Harumichi lets go; he looks up, shocked and confused, failing to meet his father’s gaze. The man is avoiding eye contact just as much as Toya had been a moment prior.
A moment passes in silence, and then there’s a quiet, gruff, “you should be more careful with these things, Toya.”

That’s not to say it isn’t there. It still is, of course it is, but there’s a weight in her chest, an unwelcome shadow in the back of her mind. The more she tries to fight it off, the harder it becomes to ignore; to no one’s surprise, the mental mantra of come on, An, just don’t think about it only makes it stick more. Discontent swirls deeper in her stomach with every moment that passes. She doesn’t like it, not one bit.
“Mm… An-chan?” Kohane’s little voice suddenly pipes up, fuzzy at the edges as she lifts her head from An’s chest, adorable in every way as she blinks slowly. “Are you okay?”
