Tony puts his back to a brick wall and eyes them all warily, and Natasha suggests calling Pepper. Steve does, and explains the situation. Pepper is quiet for a long moment. “Call Rhodey,” she says. “He’s stationed not too far away from New York City right now. He’ll be able to help.”

He blinks into the darkness, presses a hand to his aching chest, and his elbow knocks against something that sounds like wood. He frowns and reaches towards the wood and his fingers brush rough grain a few inches from his face and suddenly it clicks.

Summary
Sam Wilson has seen a lot of coping mechanisms over the years. He’s seen battle-scarred veterans turn to the bottle, seen grief-stricken wives and mothers throw themselves into charity work, seen traumatized soldiers lock the rest of the world out as they struggle to regain a sense of safety. He’s seen it all, really, both in his time in the Air Force and as a counselor at the VA.
James Buchanan Barnes, though, is something new. After a month of reluctantly-attended therapy and a carefully maintained distance between himself and everyone besides Steve, he’s finally starting to reach out. Steve is elated about it, of course, but Sam’s trained in this kind of thing, and he notices what Bucky’s new coping mechanism is: taking care of Tony Stark.

“I’ll take the floor,” he calls out as he takes off his own jacket, because this place is too minuscule to host even a futon.
“What?” Bucky looks over to see that Tony has pushed himself up onto his elbows and is staring at him in confusion. “Why? This bed can fit two.”
Bucky blinks. “Well, yeah, but…” He glances down at the dirty carpet, up at Tony, and tries not to look as confused as he feels. “I can take the floor, no problem.”
Tony rolls his eyes. “Serum or no serum, I know you’re tired.” He scoots to one side of the bed and pats the empty space. “Hop on in, soldier."
