Mycroft Holmes has mastered the life of solitude-or so he thought. A midlife desire for compansionship convinces him to adopt a dog. Life with a dog is not what he expected.
Mycroft's perfectly ordered life begins to turn to shreds (along with his belongings) thanks to the dog . Greg keeps showing up in this new world of chaos and is wanting more than to spend time with the dog and offering more than dog sitting.
Love was not part of Mycroft's life. Neither was the dog.

Summary
Mycroft Holmes has never had a life that is better than being 'fine.' He struggles with social skills and spends his weekends not speaking to anyone and only has a cactus for companionship and a brother who causes him some bother. He definitely does not get lonely, and he is completely fine.
Everything changes when he comes across Greg Lestrade, a Detective Inspector, who has a large heart that helps to repair Mycroft's damaged one. The two of them help one another through their lives of loneliness.

Summary
As a result of a mid-life crisis or a desire for a change in his life, and with a lot more free time on his hands, Mycroft Holmes starts to find himself curious about exploring his desire for sex and intimacy. It turns out that he is not the only Holmes who likes to do experiments.
Greg Lestrade is the perfect man who agrees to help Mycroft explore this new world. It is only a friend helping out a friend. The two of them realise that they might be in for more than they barged for. It might not be the worst thing in the world.

“Shouldn’t I be asking you the same question?” The other man asks him briskly, moving the sodden flat cap from his head.
“I live here,” Greg says, rather accusatory. “I’m Greg Lestrade, and who are you?”
“I’m Mycroft Holmes,” the other man says rather prickly. “I thought that you would be expecting me. Though I am not one for formalities, I am certain that you do not speak to a Duke like that.”
Mycroft inherits a title and a castle in Scotland from a distant relative and becomes an Earl, wishing for a rural life after leaving London. Greg is an estate worker in has decided to take a dislike to the new Duke, convinced that he's going to sell the castle and lose his job and home.

Mycroft and Greg first attempt to have a one-night stand on Halloween Night in 1988 that does not go to plan. Instead, they decide to become friends.
Over the next twenty years, they fall into and out of each other's lives. There are plenty of missed opportunities, and the time is never quite right for them, even if they are, perhaps, the right person for another.

A rite of passage, maybe. A symbol of another year well lived, or at the very least survived, certainly. But gifts? Not so much. Gifts, in Molly’s mind, particularly those of the Christmas variety, are like conditional rewards for good behavior or a positive relationship over the past year. They are dependent, in a way, on the actions of the recipient. The sweaters are not dependent on anything, they just come. They come to everyone that Molly considers a member of the family, carrying all her love and care with them, and attempting to work a magic that is beyond even the likes of wizardkind. "

And how could he not think about Percy’s ownership of enough shares in a sex shop to get annual gifts from the executive team.
Hell, what if they weren’t annual? What if they were quarterly?
But it had upset Percy to even joke about it. So it holed up in Oliver’s mind, only occurring to him in some of his dirtier fantasies on nights when Ministry nonsense or faraway matches meant he didn’t see Percy for days at a time.
He never expected Percy to bring it up. Let alone in the middle of the goddamn night.
