Panic, a living animal, throbs in the confined space. But it’s not the panic of the street. It’s contained, directed, transformed into an engine of frantic action. Bruce is ripping off my vest and lower armor with brutal precision, exposing the true disaster: a dark, pulsing hole that seems to grin from my abdomen. His face is a granite mask, but a vein is pounding wildly at his temple.
