Hawkins didn't rebuild, it fell apart.
The upside down leaked into Hawkins, and the two places are merged at this point in time.
The party is spilt, people are dead, and Mike Wheeler is separated from Will Byers, Hawkins is in ruins with no return.
Mike Wheeler goes against all safety procedures, leaves the bunker, and goes to find him.

He hit the ground hard, wind knocked from his lungs he gasped for air, trying to draw air into lungs that had momentarily forgotten how to. He clutched at his chest, his hand clenching as if trying to grasp the pain inside, wheezing. Looking around, panicked, he saw the blue sky, splatted with colorful clouds of white, pink and yellow.
He was laying in...? He glanced around frantically, mapping out his surroundings in a panic; Grass, 𝘴𝘰𝘧𝘵 grass peppered with yellow daisies with bluebells. Suspiciously disarming. His head shot up, seeing the other bodies falling from the sky like some twisted parable of paratroopers deploying. He let out a loud curse and scrambled back, grabbing his bruised, battered ribcage...Or
Vecna has one more plan for his enemies before he dies... sending them into a different universe, with no answer on how to escape.

Summary
Mike Wheeler was dead.
This wasn't supposed to happen, it was an accident. It was late, and Mike had been driving for what felt like a short blip in his day— but it was dark, and thick fog coated the streets as he sped off into the night towards his shared home, to get to Will.
He didn’t see the other car in time.
The drunk driver didn’t see him.- Or -
Mike dies in a car accident, and his fiancé, Will, finds out he can communicate with him in the afterlife (ghost!mike).

“I cannot allow you to do this for me.” William looks up into Michael’s onyx eyes. His nose is slightly red from the chill but his deep gaze remains wide and sincere.
“Nonsense. I would follow you anywhere, William,” Michael says gently. William is sure his cheeks turn even pinker than they already were at that comment. “Please, allow me to accompany you on this journey.”
William hesitates, unsure what to say.
“Who knows, it could be fun?” Michael brings his right hand to William’s face, gently dragging a knuckle over his cheekbones as if he were a precious jewel, the other gripping the fabric of his aubergine cloak. “What do you say?”Or
A fantasy alternate universe in which Prince William - a rare magic user - must depart on a treacherous journey north in search of a fabled sorceress. Accompanied by his loyal knight Sir Michael, William has much to learn about the ways of magic, as well as solving his increasingly worrying issue of premonitions that leave him ill. The north swirls with rumours of death and plague, but leaving the palace is William's only option if he wishes to get the answers he seeks.

Summary

Haunted by the ghosts of their pasts, the two men's lives become irrevocably entwined as they find themselves caught between the fate of humanity and their own selfish wants.
