Summary
I start to drift back across the rink towards the boards so I can set down my earbuds — they’re the cheapest ones I could get, which means they go flying at any significant movement, and my leggings don’t have goddamn pockets — when I realise I’m no longer alone, now abruptly face to face with another human being.
Worse, it’s a human being I recognise. And certainly not one I’m thrilled to see.
It’s one of the hockey players. Captain of the men’s team, to be specific. He’s twice my size, broad-shouldered and brawny, with dark hair and russet skin, a single white scar bisecting his brow that’s dramatically rumoured to be a souvenir from a backwater bar fight. He’s the sort of athlete that never fails to reduce women into giggling caricatures falling over themselves, and more infuriatingly he knows it.

Xaden Riorson thought he had figured out how to survive in this place. Now in his final year at Basgiath War College, he’s risen to the rank of Wingleader. He is focused on one thing: getting every kid of the rebellion bonded to a dragon. Then the real work can begin.
But he hadn’t counted on Violet Sorrengail, the General’s daughter, entering the Rider’s Quadrant. She’s not supposed to be here and she’s about to throw every plan he has made into chaos. Can he trust her? And more importantly, can he trust himself?
This follows the dialogue and events of Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing, retold from Xaden’s perspective. This was written prior to the release of Iron Flame, so all theories and speculation are my own and unconfirmed. It's my best guess at exploring how Xaden might have felt throughout the story and features new scenes with Liam, Garrick, Imogen, Sgaeyl and Tairn. Major plot spoilers from the very first chapter.

This story matches all the original dialogue and actions in Fourth Wing, as Xaden accuses Wingleader Amber Mavis of wrong-doing but rewritten from Xaden's perspective.
He had no proof, he knew the risks... and yet, he did it anyway.

JJ shook his head. How was he supposed to explain this feeling? How was he supposed to tell her that she made him the happiest man in the world - so happy that he woke up crying? How could he even begin to explain how much she meant to him and how lost he’d be without her and how painful it would be to never hold her again? JJ couldn’t find the words to say any of these things. Maybe one day, with her help, the words would come. But for now, he just kissed her deeply and tried to say with his kiss what he couldn’t quite say with his words.

“Eyes, Kie,” JJ whispered. He moved one of her hands around his throat so she could feel his pulse beneath her hands. He slipped one of his rings on the thumb that was around his neck and said again, “Kiara, give me your eyes.”
