He has fame like most people would kill for and he doesn't want any of it any longer. He just wants to be free of his fame and the monsters that came along with it. Shadows that hurt him and keep him silent until he feels like he might burst. Explode. Expire.
Aziraphale has his book shop and that's it. That's all he needs. After his last relationship ended badly, he's decided that he will live and die alone. It's most likely punishment for being the way that he is. He doesn't believe in God anymore-- but God might still be punishing him from breaking away from the way he was raised. For being gay.
And then one day, a very famous person shows up at his shop looking for a job. Looking for normal. Aziraphale can give him that even though he can't find it for himself. Crowley and Aziraphale heal together. It's hard, difficult even, but as they get closer, becoming fast friends in the process-- they both find that it's so worth it.
