Stede can’t help crying out in pain, in the next beat, finally giving in when an instinctive sound comes up. It’s loud, and the crew goes dead silent around him.
Stede doesn’t even notice. He’s just trying to breathe, skin tugging painfully, when a door bangs open at the opposite end of the ship.
“What the fuck was that?” Ed demands from afar, voice heard easily over the crash of the sea around them. “Was that Stede? Where the fuck is he?”
“Oh, no,” Lucius says quietly.
“If you jump overboard, babe, I swear I’ll come back for you,” Black Pete promises him.

Hermione rolled her eyes at him. “Lying flatterer.” She lightly slapped his shoulder with the back of her hand for emphasis. She didn’t actually seem angry though. Just a bit irritated.
“No lies, Granger. You seem to have figured out how to stop looking like a walking library and instead look like a witch. It suits you, whatever you’ve done.”
“Mostly, what I’ve done is lose twelve and a half stone of ginger.” Hermione finished off her drink and signalled to the bartender for a refill.

Summary
Why would you talk to me? Draco thought, behind a heavy wall of occlusion as he politely, but rotely declined the Head Girl’s offer to join her in the Great Hall, at the newly mixed tables set up in the wake of the war. Theo was sitting beside her, gamely chatting her up. Even Pansy had tentatively joined, uncharacteristically keeping herself on the fringe of the conversation. But at least she was there. Of course, thing might be different if Potter had also returned to school — after what Pansy had done. Because Draco could not sit at that table. Not after what he had done — or failed to do — when Granger was at the Manor. His heart started pounding, the memory of her screams always fresh in his mind because he relived them every time he closed his eyes. He left to go to the library.
It wasn’t as though he had much of an appetite.

“Granger, you have no idea the impact those periwinkle ruffles had on me,” Draco said defensively, before immediately looking at his feet again — the bloody coward.
She scoffed. “Ha! I think you saw your first exposed collarbone and it broke your brain.”
Blaise turned to Draco. “I mean, she’s not wrong, mate. That’s basically what happened.”
“Shut it, Zabini. Granger, I realise I’m not your favourite person and I understand why this is hard for you to accept —”
“You just told me you made an Unbreakable Vow in bloody fourth year — something that Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumbass over here helped with — that you would have sex with me before you graduated from Hogwarts. And now if you don’t shag me in the next few days, you'll die. Not just sex with someone, full stop, mind you. It has to be sex with me. Muggle-born, notorious swot and insufferable know-it-all Hermione Jean Granger. Me.”
Draco swallowed. “Yes. It has to be you.”
“I call bullshit.”

"I know, it’s fucking weird, right?" she said, oblivious to Harry's response as she stared across the room at a smiling Draco Malfoy who was discussing quidditch with Ron. Ronald Weasley. The same Ron Weasley that Malfoy had loathed since birth.
What on earth was he up to?
"Maybe he decided it's reasonable to call someone he has worked with for three years by their first name?" Harry said slowly.
Hermione scoffed. “Then why didn't he do it before now! Start in 8th year or even the first year we worked together at the Ministry. I've called him "Draco" at least some of the time since before we even graduated.”
"Maybe he's shy?”
"Oh come off it! He's the least shy person we know. He bloody well loves attention and you know it.” Malfoy was now passing out drinks to Ron, Fred, George and Ginny — all of whom were taking it gratefully before reengaging in conversation.
Unbelievable.

Summary
Hermione crept inside the library at Malfoy Manor as quietly as possible. It was as good a place as any to catch her metaphorical breath, before she had to plaster on a fake smile and rejoin the ball to keep up appearances. Maybe she could find that book on the origins of arithmancy Draco mentioned the last time they were here? Hermione doubted she’d be back at the Manor any time soon. If ever. Not after tonight.
Making her way to her favourite spot in the back corner, Hermione was taken aback to discover Draco collapsed in one of the wing-backed chairs; wearily rubbing his eyes with one hand, as the other gripped an empty glass tightly. Notes of firewhisky lingered in the air.
He hadn’t noticed her.
Recovering from her surprise as best she could, Hermione deliberately kept her voice light. “Malfoy? Why on Earth are you hiding in the library? This is your Engagement Ball. Shouldn’t you be out there accepting fawning praise from Sacred Twenty-Eight luminaries for doing your part in keeping the Malfoy family tree as devoid of branches as possible?”

Draco blinked, confused by her inflection. “Ah, yes. I was running errands. What are you reading?”
“Oh Theo dropped off some reports and this one is fascinating. I started reading and got so caught up in it that I forgot to take lunch altogether.” Her smile was wide but it emphatically did not reach her eyes. He felt his stomach drop.
“Oh?” Draco asked, trying to sound casual as he ignored his growing anxiety. “What’s it about?”
Her smile turned vicious as she glared daggers at him. “Oh, let me read it to you. List of cons when considering the unlikely possibility of dating the Golden Girl herself, Hermione Granger.”
