When Ellie was leading David's men away from where she'd hidden Joel and the horse was shot out from under her, she fell.
Hard.
In ancient times, the first sign of developing civilization was a healed broken leg, as it leaves the individual all but helpless while they recover. And in David's words, "even lone wolves need to be cared for when they break their whole left side."
Little does he know that she's not a lone wolf.
Because Ellie’s got Joel. And he will never stop protecting her.
(Canon divergent from episode 8. When Ellie falls, she breaks her left arm, leg, and two ribs, leaving her vulnerable and trapped in the lodge as David insists on caring for her. Because of her injuries, she's not fit to fight - but Joel, despite his own stab wound, is willing to fight to the death to get his girl to safety and get her better.)

“I c… I can’t keep going on like this, Joel,” Ellie sniffled from the hiding place she’d made in his shirt. She was so tired of the nightmares, and the panic attacks, and not being able to eat without being sick; she’d been waiting for all of it to lessen with time, but it hadn’t. In fact, it’d only gotten worse. “... I’m so tired.” Her words shriveled up, and were soon accompanied by the now familiar sound of her crying. It was softer, more tired sounding than he’d grown used to.
“I know, baby girl,” Joel uttered, letting his breath fall warmly against the top of Ellie’s head as he sighed. If he could take all of her pain away and put it on himself, he’d do it in an instant, but he couldn’t, and so he was left feeling nothing but helpless. “Listen to me, things will get easier-”

Joel's decision to save Ellie in that hospital left consequences that would follow him into Jackson. Joel left no trace of himself in that hospital. No trace except a name: Ellie Williams. Joel's current strained relationship with Ellie left him with the decision to allow Ellie some freedom from him which meant early morning patrols. Yet, when Jesse alerts him that Ellie never arrived to the checkpoint, Joel has to revert back to the man he banished to the depths on his soul many years ago.

Tess reaches out, places a hand on Ellie’s shoulder to let her know she’s there, expecting her to be relieved. To be glad Tess is alive and that she doesn’t have to try and find her again, that they can just hurry up and leave this awful place-
What she’s not expecting is for Ellie to scream out no, to push her away and hit at her chest and arms with loose, frantic fists. She doesn’t expect Ellie to lurch backwards, so strongly that Tess nearly loses both her grip and her balance.
“Get off of me!” She shrieks, and Tess hasn’t ever heard her sound like that - not when they were being chased by infected, not even when she was bitten for the second time. And, in a terrifying and horrifically familiar sort of way - Tess recognises the fear in her eyes. Something cornered and vulnerable and scared.

It’s a bit like trying on an old jacket, settling into Jackson. The general shape of it is familiar, even comforting in its own way, but there’s an adjustment period, a little breaking-in until everything fits like it should.
Well, it’s like an old jacket for him. The way Ellie looks sometimes, completely bewildered and turning to him for reassurance or clarification, he thinks it’s a bit more like trying on a Halloween costume for her.
Tommy and Maria had brought them their meals at first, and he’d at least been gratified to get some real food into her. After Silver Lake, she’d been off all meat for a long while, and in the hospital, exhaustion and pain had stolen what little appetite she’d managed to recover by that point. There’d been a little adjustment period here in Jackson, when they fell back on their routine of him taking bites of meat first to reassure her they were safe, but she’s slowly begun building back some flesh on her skinny little self, and it’s like he can feel a bit of his own restlessness settle with each plate of cheesy potatoes she downs with relish.
