Tide Lambert is the newest firewatchmen at Arcadia National Park, trying to escape from the pressures of life in the city and his now broken family. Is the forest a cure for his issues, or a new problem entirely?

Mark enunciated the space between his words, dragging the L's out, and distantly Tide could hear cans crunching. "No one comes out here cause they want to protect wildlife- you come out here cause you're running from something. What'dya do, new guy?" "You're rude- maybe you should guess since you're so smart." Tide found himself picking at the desk, running his fingers over something hastily carved into the wood, something he was too tired to pursue reading. "Alright I'll give it a shot- you uh…" He snickered "you're a robot, some kinda android sent by aliens to survey the planet for our new alien overlords— that or a fresh divorcee". Mark rambled, seemingly proud of his witty storytelling. "New guy?… Tide?". Tide fell asleep at the desk, his hand still hovering over the carving, "Ashe Wuz Here"

"We're stuck together. You said it." Dakota's tone flared with the slightest bit of defiance again. "We're saving the world together."
Mark paused, looking up with raised eyebrows and a disapproving expression. "'Saving the world'?"
"That's what this is. I'm saving the world because I'm a hero."
"You're saving the world?"
"It's my abilities that're gonna save everybody! You’re— you're a villain, but I'm— I'll save the world! I'll be a hero!"
Silence reigned after that, as Mark only sent the kid a skeptical glance and continued gathering items for the road.---
