“Truth.”
“How many times have you fallen in love?”
The table was quiet, but Eddie didn’t take long to think it over. “Three times.”
“With who?” Lucy asked.
“Nope, not part of the question,” he smiled at Lucy, easy as anything. Buck tried to count quickly in his head, the math not adding up.
“My turn, right?” Eddie asked the group. “Chim. Truth or dare.”
or: the 118 has a 24 hour shift, and zero calls. The firefam spends it playing games, and everyone takes the opportunity to tell Buck just how much they love him.

Summary
“I don’t think you need a dad, that’s not how families work, right? Like, they all look different,” Chris says. “But it’s okay if you want one. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
“What’s it like, having two?” Denny asks, and Buck has to cover his mouth so he doesn’t give himself away.
Christopher’s laugh is loud, and sweet, and tugs on Buck’s heartstrings in the same way that it always has done. He doesn’t even hesitate to say, “It’s fun. I love them.”

Summary
It’s something about the way Eddie phrases it. Something about the combination of his words and the way he’s staring down at the floor, and the flush in his cheeks and the way he’s fidgeting. Buck thinks, abruptly, he’s going to ask me on a date.
“Well I - wanted to tell you first, and I need someone to watch Chris, anyways - I know he’s getting old enough now he doesn’t like feeling like he’s got a babysitter, so I was hoping - sorry. Not the point. Uh. I have a date on Saturday.”
Just as abruptly as his own hopes had come soaring up above the cloud cover of his own unawareness - they go crashing back down to the floor - to the basement, and into the mud. “A date?” Buck rasps out.
or - the one where eddie decides to start dating again, buck figures out his own feelings just a minute too late, and then he spends a week going through the five stages of grief

Summary
There’s something morbidly beautiful about the way he hangs there, framed against the remaining fractals sparking around him. Buck has always been beautiful, all golden hair and earnest eyes, but framed against the universe he believes so heavily in, Buck is ethereal — an angel doomed to fall.
Eddie won’t let him fall. Buck’s place is in the Heavens and by Eddie’s side, and he’s tired of everyone trying to take that from them.
Or, Buck gets struck by lightning, Eddie saves him, and now they’re just waiting for him to wake up.

Summary
Exhaustion lessens its weight from his bones as he drinks in the familiarity of his home, his gaze searching for everything and nothing in particular as he slips his jacket off, hanging it on the coat rack next to Buck’s.
It’s not until then that his gaze lands on the man himself.
Buck lays sprawled out on the couch, back cushions discarded to make space for his broad shoulders, his legs thrown all over the place, snoring lightly.
Or, Buck sleeps weird, Eddie fixes it, gets stuck, and Buck loves his man.

“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
Christopher is quiet for a moment, mouth twisting up like he’s trying to find the right words. “Why didn’t you tell me you were going on a date?”
Eddie’s not proud of choking on his spit, but—well, he does that, right in his son’s doorway.
...or, no, of course that wasn’t a date. Wait. Was that a date?

“She’s pretty,” Chim commentates.
Hen snorts. “They’re all pretty. That’s the point.”
Chim has his phone hooked up to the TV so they can watch the Love Island premier episode in awkward chunks between calls. They’ve already been interrupted once and they haven’t even seen anyone ‘couple up’ yet—just the intros from the boys, where Buck described himself as looking for a genuine connection while ducking his head and laughing. Hen had cooed over that, talking about how if anyone could find that on a reality show, it would be Buck. Eddie can’t help but agree; Buck has a knack for making people love him.
Not that Eddie is speaking from personal experience, or anything.
(Buck goes on Love Island to get back on the dating scene. For eight weeks, Eddie watches.)

Summary
Buck is such a constant in their life that Eddie hadn’t even dared to imagine a future that he wasn’t a part of.
Eddie sees Buck in everything. He’s at the firehouse, and in their home; he’s at the grocery store, and their favourite bakery, and Christopher’s school. There’s nowhere Eddie can look - nowhere he can go - that Buck isn’t there, too.
And it’s so very beautiful, and it hurts so very much.

Summary
The memories of those visits tend to blend together in Joel’s mind, a soft-focus blur of tastes and sounds and particularly memorable jokes, usually told by Frank. Joel remembers the year that Tess had gotten her hands on some Elton John sheet music and Frank had point-blank asked if she thought all gay men liked Elton John, pretending to be legitimately offended. Tess had apologized profusely, something she rarely did, until Frank had cracked and, face splitting open wide, had admitted that he actually is pretty fond of Honky Chateau.

Summary
He's kicking himself for not getting up sooner, because by the time he gets there at a quarter to eight, Eddie's looking frazzled. His hair is uncharacteristically messy, and he has a hunted look in his eye, and he's –
Okay, so he's beautiful. And it's not like that's news to Buck, but lately it's been hitting him like a two by four to the back of the skull at some pretty inconvenient times. Like right now.

“Speak for yourself, grandpa,” Buck says. “I could sleep in a tent every night.”
Eddie lifts his eyebrows, looking skeptical. “When was the last time you did it?”
“Um,” Buck says, trying to remember if he’s gone camping since he came to LA.
“Exactly,” Eddie grins. “We’ll see what your back feels like tomorrow.”
“Dad gives great backrubs,” Christopher announces, and Eddie’s grin goes a little lopsided.
He keeps looking at Buck though, and Buck feels his cheeks warm when he says, “I really do.”
