Strange things happen on the Grandline all the time and that's just the way Luffy likes it. But he’s not so sure about this particular adventure he stumbled into: one moment he’s sailing the waters of the New World with his crew and in the next he’s not only separated from his crew but apparently also fell 27 years back in time. He has to find a way back home, ideally without messing up anything in the past that will alter the course of time – which is easier said than done when it’s none other than a rookie Crocodile that agrees to help him.

Something unreadable is on Kakashi’s face, but he doesn’t seem impressed. “You two are eloping?”
“No,” Naruto says pointedly. His gaze drops to the floor. For once, he chooses his words carefully. “But if he can’t stay, then I’ll go with him.”
Kakashi’s voice is grave. “You’re the number one candidate for Hokage. You tirelessly ranted on and on about how this is your dream. Are you going to give up all that hard work?”
“It’ll just be a little while,” Naruto mutters, not quite believing himself.
“Surely you aren’t that naïve, Naruto,” Kakashi warns. “If you leave with Sasuke, I don’t think we’ll ever see you again.”
“I’m not being naïve,” Naruto says. “I would come back.”
Kakashi’s voice has dropped any pretence of humour. “I thought you hated people who lie to themselves the most.”
After their legendary battle and final fight in the Valley of the End, Naruto slowly heals in the hospital. Sasuke doesn’t.
Three years later, whilst on a diplomatic mission to the Hidden Grass Village, Naruto encounters a masked mercenary who takes him by storm.

Neteyam doesn’t move any closer to the latch of the gate, staying safely behind it where Ao’nung can’t touch him. He hides a smile and tilts his head, his hands lacing together briefly before falling apart.
“And what do we smell like? My magic and I.”
“Cinnamon,” Ao’nung says, low and dark, “and the lake out back.”
“Yeah?” Neteyam responds, fingers curling upwards as he feels power spark behind his palms.
“Mmhmm. I can smell it now. When I saw you do it, it was in the air, but I thought it was the magnolias. Then I touched you like I did, ‘round your waist. Realized it was you.” He drawls.
Neteyam flushes all dark at the memory and Ao’nung counts it as a small victory.
“You pay too much attention to me. You’ve gotta stop.”
“I don’t make it a habit to do what I’m told. Not when it comes to you. I told you that so,” he shrugs, “fair game.”
