Steve often wakes up from his nightmare screaming, calling for robin. his robin. after a normal Friday evening movie night, the kids all decide they want to have a sleepover at Steve's house. against his protests, everyone stays the night. during a night terror, he starts crying for robin, thinking that he' s calling for their robin, she tries to comfort him. in a panic induced state - still half asleep, Steve, or should I say Finney lets some things slip. The gang find out that Steve is more than he seems to be.

Robin felt his blood go cold. His eyes went wide, as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. This couldn’t be real. Ernesto’s name had only been in the reaping once, there was no way his name could’ve been drawn. Robin’s breathing hitched, becoming unstable and heavy. Only once he saw Ernesto walking down the path to the stage, his shirt untucked, did he snap out of his haze.
“Ernie!” Robin cried out. “Ernesto!” He quickly began to push through the crowd, not caring for how harsh or roughly he may have shoved anyone. Politeness was the last thing on his mind. Reaching Ernesto, Robin quickly pushed the boy behind him.
“I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute!”

"Seriously," Robin scoffed from across the table, tearing a piece of bread in half. He nudged Finney with his elbow, a confident, sharp grin on his face. "Just wait until the flag-capture in the deep woods. They won't even see us coming in the dark."
Billy, sitting right next to Griffin, let out a quiet laugh. He adjusted his counselor whistle, leaning over rest his head on the shoulder of his boyfriend. "I don't know, Robin. Maybe North Denver is just cursed. Every time we get near that trophy, someone manages to drop the torch or trip over a tree root."
"Hey! Speak for yourself, Showalter," Robin laughed, tossing a balled-up napkin at Billy's face, which Billy expertly ducked, causing Griffin to let out a rare, bright laugh.
But amidst the joking and the deafening cheers of the crowd, Finney didn't laugh.
He sat completely still, his clipboard resting heavy on his lap. When Billy said the word cursed, a sudden, ice-cold spike of unease pierced straight through Finney’s chest. It wasn't the typical, easily-overwhelmed stress of managing a hundred campers. This was different. It was a heavy, suffocating weight that suddenly made it hard to swallow.

Since he heard the first phone, Finney knew his life would never go the way he expected. After running away at sixteen because his dad insisted he was going insane, Finney has been parading around as a private investigator and following the calls of the dead to put tortured souls to rest. Now, at twenty-two, Finney is stuck in the same cycle of solving cold cases without knowing what would come next. When his sister points him in the direction of his first 'live case' involving a serial killer and missing kids, Finney finds himself in North Denver and completely out of his comfort zone.
Nothing goes according to his usual plan and, for the first time in his life, Finney finds himself in a place that he isn't sure he wants to leave when he's done with his case. His longing to stay, however, is constantly overshadowed by the ringing of phones, the threat of a serial killer, and knowing he can never reveal the truth about himself.
