“Jax?” She murmurs, not wanting her voice to carry to neighboring rooms. “Your door’s open. You alright?”
There’s no answer. Pomni’s mouth thins, and even as she knows he’d probably string her up by her hat for letting herself in, she gently pushes on the door. It swings inward with a creak that wouldn’t have been haunting had it not opened onto dead silent pitch blackness.

Pomni shivers. The desire to flee rears its head in her guts again and her breaths become shaky in a way they haven’t since first landing in the Circus. If Jax has abstr—
She hurriedly shakes the thought away. Besides, Jax is the furthest from insane or obsessed with finding an exit out of the whole cast. Just by virtue of his ability to play by the rules of the Circus, every one of them is more likely to lose their minds and fully abstract before he’d even be in danger of it (Plus, the room is dark and silent, no rampaging monster full of glowing eyes to be found).
He’s definitely still not responding to her calling out to him, though. Something is still off.

When they are arguing, instead of lunging at Jax, Pomni looses it and tries to end it. She didn’t think reaching a game over with the intention of it being permanent would lead to anything.
Expect it does.
Jax learns pretending not to care doesn’t mean it’s true, and that the circus doesn’t function as he’d convinced himself it does.

“Simon,” Soap purred into his ear tantalizingly. He stepped away from the guard and looked back in Ghost’s direction. “Take care of him for me, sir?” he pleaded hopefully.
Ghost gripped his weapon until his knuckles turned white. He stayed quiet, flipping his scope back to its normal settings and letting his eyes bounce between Soap and the slowly waking guard. Pushing out a heavy breath, Ghost switched his laser back on and pointed it at Soap. “You’re fucking lucky I don’t put one between your eyes for disobeying a direct order, soldier,” Ghost seethed.
Before Soap had a chance to react to his threat, Ghost pivoted his sights to the guard and fired three shots furiously. One to kill him, and two more to desecrate his dead body for putting his worthless hands on Johnny.

Ghost narrowed his eyes, fingertips gripping the corner of the front cover of the folder in anticipation to open it, “Why on earth are we taking in someone who’s been relocated three times?”
“He has potential, Simon.” Price said firmly, “I’ve seen what he can do. He’s damn good at it. He just needs some training.”
“Sir,” Ghost said gruffly, trying not to recoil at the prospect of training a troublemaker rookie for the next several months, “With all due respect, I don’t think I’m the best fit for this.”
“I think you are.” Price chuckled, “Plus, he liked your scent the best. Reacted well to it, so I think he’ll be a little less trouble for you than his past handlers.”
Scent? Handlers? Oh, fuck no. Price better not be insinuating what Ghost thought he was.
He flipped open the front cover of the folder, revealing an ID photo of the soldier on one side, and a file with all his information on the other.

You knew he could handle himself around any motor, he was a great mechanic. You just couldn't afford to fix it. Even if he did the work for free you couldn't afford to eat and pay for parts.
“Hey, did I ask you if I could fix it? No, I said let me see what I can do.” His voice was deep and stern. The authority embedded within shook your core. No one had ever demanded to help you like that before.

Over a thousand years on his own makes for a lonely existence, but Crowley has the life of another to think about, to protect.
