Dustin would have laughed if you’d told his younger self he’d become a regular drug user. That wasn’t him. The kid who went to science camp. Who was branded a genius. High school valedictorian. He wasn’t the type to go to parties every weekend. Except at eighteen that was exactly what he was doing. Every weekend a different dorm. Drinking because he really didn’t want to be the weird kid again. Drinking led to girls, which then led to boys, who were infinitely better. Which somewhere along the way led to ecstasy.
Except the feeling Dustin had been chasing always felt hollow. Never quite helping the way he wanted. The way he needed. And every single time he ended up calling Steve. Never speaking, just needing to hear his voice.
Until Dustin has a bad trip.
Taking too much. Flying no longer feeling like flying but falling into an endless abyss. Needing Steve more than ever.

“So, uh, this is kinda new,” Dustin comments as they climb into the car. He’s got the paper bag of food in his lap, and Steve leans across the center console to sneak his hand inside and steal some fries.
“You’re kinda new,” Steve says, stuffing his mouth full and wiping his fingers off on his jeans before reaching out to pull the driver’s-side door closed.
Dustin rolls his eyes as Steve buckles his seatbelt, moving the bag out of reach when Steve looks like he’s gonna go for another handful of fries.
In which they're working things out as they go along, but that doesn't stop Dustin from living his best life.

Summary
It’s not something Robin would ever admit, but out of all of Steve’s children, Dustin might possibly be her favorite.
He’s loud and opinionated and almost detrimentally blunt most of the time, but he’s also fiercely protective of Steve and their weird little friendship. So yeah, she likes Dustin. Which is why she doesn’t mind it much when he takes a seat beside her at the edge of the pool on a hot spring day, only to proclaim that he wants her advice on how to woo a boy.
In which Robin is a Jedi Master – or a fairy godmother, depending on who you ask.
