"I- I don't know- what the fuck? What's going on?" Eret turned to his friends, hoping for some kind of explanation. They looked at him incredulously.
"Hold on, what did you just say?" Tommy asked him.
"I said, what's going-" Eret didn't have time to finish when he felt a sharp sting in his neck.
Instantly, he collapsed to the ground, his muscles giving out on him as energy drained from his body. The sounds of bodies falling to the ground surrounded him as each of his friends fell alongside him. He tried to scream, but his mouth wouldn’t open. Fear rushed through his veins.
An iron needle clattered to the ground next to him, the tip coated with an iridescent gray mixed with blood. He watched as the strange mixture seeped into the cold, stone ground.
A shadow loomed over him, a porcelain mask leering down. "Eret, you were supposed to be on our side. I’m glad I came prepared.”

Time stopped.
Tommy’s entire body went numb. He tried to open his mouth to say something, but his body was determined to keep him silent. His vision went dark, and he could no longer feel his headphones over his ears. The mouse in his hand. The slight breeze of his ceiling fan. For a few seconds, he couldn’t feel anything.
His senses came back to him all at once. The first thing Tommy noticed was the weight in his right hand -- a bow. His nostrils stung with the lingering scent of gunpowder. In front of him was a masked figure. Their right arm was bent, their elbow by their face. In their left hand was a bow, aiming directly at--

“I won’t laugh.” Bucky straightens out both his back and his expression and scoots closer, knee colliding with Sam’s own. He keeps it there; it feels hot and solid, even through the kevlar. “C’mon, I promise. Just tell me.”
Sam turns it over in his head for a long moment. Swallows hard. Rubs his palms across his thighs.
“Okay,” he says, looking away. “Do you believe in ghosts, man?”
Bucky laughs, the asshole.
Sam has been haunted all his life. This is the first time he's ever thought of telling anyone about it.

Summary
At nine, she gets four rounds in before being disqualified. She grumbles and groans about it, heads out to the mountains and practices, practices, practices. She’s going to win this. She’s going to show her parents, show everyone, that she’s not incapable, not helpless, not fragile.
The earth sings. Toph moves with it. Practices with badger moles and with random challengers. Falls and skins her knees and gets back up, feels the dirt and the sweat, feels the validation of being treated like an equal, of having people fighting her with their all. It hums inside of her and grows and grows and grows, and it makes her feel powerful.
If her parents ever realize she’s missing, they don’t ask.

Sorry, I’m—totally snooping.”
“It’s okay,” Peter shrugs, slouching against the door frame. “It’s not my stuff.”
He’s got a point.
