“My name is Mydei,” he offers, perfectly neutral.
The mechanic beams at him brightly, eyes crinkling delightfully. He seems genuinely ecstatic to make this acquaintance. He stretches out his hand toward him, a bracelet made of silver and blue cords sliding lower to his wrist. “Phainon.”
Mydei repeats the name in his mind. Records it and underlines it with a neat blue line, then glances at the mechanic’s face once more. He records it as well, attaches that blinding grin to the name and occupation, marks down the skills and little details he’s noticed so far. His eyes are blue, yes, but the pupils are wrong. Yellow. They must be cybernetics as well, used to make his job easier without the limitations of human eyesight. They suit him, somehow, even if unnatural.
Mydei grasps the offered hand, feels the grip match his strength. The temperature rides just slightly on the warmer side. If Mydei turns his palm just so, he might be able to get his fingerprint and—
Phainon breaks the grip, smiling once more. It’s a pretty smile.
or; Mydei is an android who keeps getting himself injured. He also keeps dragging himself in all states of destruction to Phainon's workshop to get fixed.

“No and no.” Veritas closes his eyes in an impressive show of patience. “If you could be transparent for one second, convince me that you are truly and completely on board with—“
“Am I not always transparent?” Aventurine laughs as he pushes away the hands on him. “Exacting as always, doctor. Fine then. You have full permission to fuck me. In fact, I’d be in your debt — how does that sound?”
Ratio and Aventurine are trapped in a box with only one way out.

"Are you ashamed of it, then?" Mydei cuts him off, struggling to keep his scent from swelling. "Do you find your affections unnatural or repulsive? Or have I not done enough to prove myself to you as a worthy mate?"

"I would like it if you leaned on me more."

Phainon’s soulmark appeared when he was a young boy in Aedes Elysiae. It was supposed to tell him the name of his soulmate, but it was written in an alphabet he had never seen before. He delighted in the idea of a soulmate from a faraway land.
Of course, life didn’t turn out as he’d planned. By the time he arrived in Okhema, love was the last thing on his mind. He'd never learned how to read the mark, and at this point, he'd resolved he never would. He'd dedicated his life to the Flame Chase.
Once he met Mydei, he felt a connection he had never experienced with anyone. Surely, if he had a soulmate, it had to be him. They started spending more time together, growing closer, until Mydei informed him - he had a soulmate, but it wasn't Phainon.

Veritas frowned in confusion, only to make the connection a millisecond later.

He squeezed Aventurine’s waist again, more intentional. Slower. This time, despite how Aventurine ducked his head, Veritas saw and felt the sudden hitch in the smaller man’s breath against his sternum. The way the swaying bough of Aventurine’s spine went stiff. The way a flush rose to the shell of his ear exposed by the sweet little tinted braid woven along his temple. The awkward, trembling laugh that followed, just barely audible over the pulsating music.
An answering rush of heat came over Veritas, renewed arousal surging through him. That small, taut waist under his hands… Aventurine liked being touched there. By him.

Aventurine leans against the balcony railing, gold city light catching against the rings on his fingers. “You know,” he says, “most people would’ve requested a different room by now.”
Dr. Ratio looks up from his datapad just long enough to meet his eyes. “Most people,” he replies calmly, “are less tolerable than you.”
For a second, Aventurine forgets how to answer.
Ratio notices that too.
Dr. Ratio and Aventurine are sent by the IPC to Somnus-V, a planet whose economy runs on traded memories and emotion. As they navigate the upper district’s political elite, the two find themselves being constantly monitored in a society built around emotional vulnerability and psychological control. Meanwhile, Aventurine’s growing feelings for Ratio begin complicating a mission that was supposed to remain strictly professional.

In a weird way, he feels as though he’s conned Aventurine, because if Aventurine knew the truth - that Veritas is horribly and unceasingly attracted to him - he would never have approached him with this proposition.
But he doesn’t know, and now Veritas has to pretend that he’s ever had a romantic relationship before. He would say that it can’t be that hard - billions of people have had successful romantic relationships without prior research or experience - but Veritas is keenly aware that he is not like even billions of other people.
Aventurine approaches Veritas with a teensy, tiny proposition - that they pretend to be a couple for the sake of Aventurine's reputation on his newest Harmony-worshipping planetary aquisiton.

That forces Aventurine's eyes to open a little wider. He'd known the doctor was ultimately going to accept, but he'd still always imagined being memorable enough of a companion to warrant a little heads up. Even a text, a short one that just read, "I accepted." That would've been enough for Aventurine.
“Before you make any ridiculous assumptions, I have not accepted the position.”
Aventurine smiles. “Didn't say anything.”
“Your face did.”
“And here I thought you were a scholar, not a mind reader.”
Dr. Ratio is offered the position of a lifetime. Aventurine knows he’s going to take it—so, after years of wanting something he never planned on asking for, Aventurine decides there’s no harm in having it once before Ratio leaves.
He is wrong about several things.
