Summary
If you’d asked Ren to make a list of things Akechi might do after surviving certain death, twice, he would not have put ‘continue his dumb celebrity career’ on it anywhere. Like, not even as a back-up option. Not even close.
Akechi shrugs. “My agent called. There was still interest. I need money to live. Do you expect me to get a job at 777?”
Akechi’s face is on the 777. His smile glimmers out at the world, his eyes sparkling with secrets, as if nothing could be more coyly, erotically compelling than a cheap can of iced tea. The photographer seems to have been very, very interested in the way Akechi’s long fingers in black leather gloves set off the sweet curve of his lower lip. Every time Ren works a shift he has to look at this poster for hours. And the advertising campaign is working, so he also has to look at the mini-version on the special limited edition cans of iced tea that everyone is suddenly buying.

The shadow’s laughter echoes, shrill and broken. “I am humanity’s shade,” she says, “Your hopes, your dreams. I am the stories you tell at night.”
“You’re testing my fucking patience,” Goro says, gritting his teeth.
She turns to look at him, tilting her head with slow, cat-like grace. Goro widens his stance and grips the hilt of his sword. He refuses to look away. She glances up and down his form, yellow eyes narrow, searching. Then, she stops; she smiles. “You can wake him up with love,” she says. “True love.”

Ren can feel the grin on his face, and he can’t stop it. “I gotta open the store tomorrow, I only serve coffee.”
“Absolutely idiotic. Why would I agree to that?"
Ren shrugs one shoulder and leans back against the movie theater wall, smiling. He’s feeling light on his feet right now. It’s been a bad day, but the end is nice. “Call it penance.”
“Penance for what,” Akechi says.
His smile stays where it is as he glances away for a moment, then meets Akechi’s eyes again. “Being yourself.”

Summer vacation back in Tokyo was supposed to be two things: an exciting break from the mundanity of home, and a chance to see people he's missed so much it hurts. If he survives, Ren has good news for himself on both.

Akechi peers up at him, clicks his tongue. “Keep digging, Kurusu, I’m sure one day you’ll figure out something new about me.”

Summary
“Stop me," is all he can say, through grit teeth, his hands fisted in Akira’s shirt.
“Why?” Akira just asks, and his voice is so, so honest.
Goro swallows hard, feels it bob in the pit of his throat. “I could ruin you otherwise.”
Akira just gives him a lopsided smile; Goro thinks it’s awfully unfair that he’s still this adorable, even with blood on his face. Akira jerks his head sideways and his glasses clatter uselessly to the floor. Somehow, he seems more see-through now than ever.
Akira covers Goro’s hands with his own, leaning in close. “Nothing is stopping you,” he whispers, breath hot against Goro’s ear, perfect lips just grazing the shell, “Take what’s yours.”
(Morgana convinces Akechi to spend one last night at Leblanc. In his defense, he likely didn’t expect Akechi to spend it by living out a long-running fantasy he’s had of punching Akira in the face.)
(Which might have actually been a little too effective.)

And Goro would usually open his eyes and scowl half-heartedly at him, natural instincts at denying affection kicking in like an old clockwork, and Akira would repeat the gesture purely to rile him up because he knows Goro secretly craves and loves attention amidst the absolute dark depravity that is the core of his soul (Goro’s words) and it would usually end up with Goro flipping their positions, intent on getting retaliation with a blush on his face but today is the second of February and Goro’s face merely softens because he knows and remembers, just like Akira does.
On the second of February, Akira and Goro wake up together.

The photographer was kneeling at the end of the aisle, dressed in blacks and light blues, holding a professional looking camera up to his face. Honey brown hair was gathered in a low pony that rested against a set of broad shoulders, that were covered in a white dress shirt and blue vest.
“Excuse me,” Akira said, taking a few steps closer to the man, “I was sent to find…”
The man whipped his head away from his camera to Akira and blinked. A pair of familiar brownish red eyes widened in surprise— that Akira’s own mirrored—as they stared at each other across the garden path.
“You…” Akira finished quietly, suddenly finding it hard to breathe. “...Akechi…”

Morgana turns his skeptical gaze on him. “Are you sure? You weren’t feeling so great earlier...”
Akechi watches their target for a moment longer, and the illusion of his soft yukata and softer hair dispels under his glass shard of a smile. There isn’t a trace of pain on his face anymore—only simmering, dark excitement. “As I said. I don’t like to lose.”
And neither does Ren. Yeah, they’re head to toe in yukata and sandals, and yeah, everyone is right: this is so, so stupid. Ren is so stupid. But he’s gonna climb this roof and catch that goddamn cop.
He meets Akechi’s gaze beat for beat. “Let’s do it.”

Who says you have to see Morgana speak in the Metaverse before you can hear him in the real world? Not the few hundred officers who arrested Ren in Sae’s Palace two years ago, that’s for sure.
