Summary
“How many catowls do you have to see to think it’s strange? Before you’d notice something was wrong?”
It had taken Zuko all of two seconds to come up with his answer, a scowl on his face and fists clenched at his sides.
“One. Catowls aren’t native to the Fire Nation: only the Earth Kingdom.”
In the moment, Zuko was so sure and so strong-willed that it only made sense. But he was wrong.
The answer was three catowls. The first wouldn’t seem real. After all, he’d never seen it before, so it was probably a fluke. The second would be real, sure, but he’d assume that would be the first catowl, and would think that maybe it was migrating. The third catowl would finally tip him over the edge. Because catowls didn’t travel in threes.
There was only one eclipse. Somehow, he had lived three others in the last few days.
The question was, Why? What did the spirits want him to do?

Sokka couldn’t stop himself from laughing, probably hysterically by the sound of it, right in Zuko’s face. “If anyone’s the ‘man with the plan’, it’s me.”
Zuko’s face scrunched up at this, nose crinkling, eyebrow furrowing, and mouth pouting. It was so damn cute, the only reason Sokka wasn’t overwhelmed by it was because of the sheer disbelief that had come over him. “What do you mean?”
“I’m the one who’s mapped out our entire road trip so far. Aang’s just the kid with the keys.”
“He’s on a road trip?! This isn’t-it’s a vacation?!” His golden eyes were bright and baffled.
“/We/ are on a road trip,” Sokka corrected, his hand going up with his index pointing in the air beside Zuko’s head. “And kinda? If vacations last multiple months and the destinations are all the wonders of America, I guess-”

“He had to have been taken,” their Firelord said forcefully. “There was no trail. No blood. I can’t- he didn’t even-”
And suddenly the entire room saw the mask beneath. Why the anger was so strong. Their Firelord was in agony, yet had no wounds. Not even a scratch, if the reports were to be believed. Someone had made sure of that.
His face immediately righted itself, becoming harder and colder, his jaw clenching almost painfully. His black hair shined in the violent flames cascading around him from the walls. The long red scar on his left eye looked more grotesque in the light. “Find him. He can’t have gone far, not-” he hesitated, strongly, steeling himself once more and looking sharply at the men and women before him. “Not with that injury.”
But if they were hoping to find Councilman Sokka, Ambassador of the Southern Water Tribe in their search, they were in for a surprise.
He was good at hiding when he didn’t want to be found.

“So are you going to fire me, or what?” Sokka said after it became too much and Zuko’s eyes on him felt like they were burning his skin.
“Fire you?” Zuko scoffed at him. “For what, being blind?”
Sokka gritted his teeth and bit down the retort that boiled in his chest. Arguing wouldn’t save his position.
“Despite the fact you were tardy on your first day,” Zuko said, the tone of his voice cold. Sokka would have cringed openly but he was too wired. He should have just taken Aang’s van. “We can overlook this. I was told you have some pretty good recommendations under your sleeve and I’ve heard you’re good at your job.”

In which Sokka is late on his first day after some idiot nearly hits him with a motorcycle. Then that idiot ended up being his extremely hot boss.
