Elrond had lived without his parents for this long. He could certainly continue to do so if they proved to be indifferent. That didn't stop his hand from shaking when he reached out to knock on the door.

Summary
“When I was a boy and heard you turned on us for Morgoth, I thought you a coward”. Eärendil admitted, looking away from Maeglin. “But when I faced his evil myself, I am surprised you were even able to survive him”.
/
As a child, Eärendil hated Maeglin for betraying Gondolin to Morgoth. Since his kingdom fell, Eärendil regarded his cousin as weak for breaking under the torture of the Dark Lord. All changes however, when Eärendil faces Morgoth and his forces on the battlefield. Now, filled with nothing but sympathy for his cousin, he seeks him out in Valinor to mend what was broken.
