Summary
On the Planet of his birth, Cloud had destroyed Sephiroth years ago. The reactors are long cold, the world is saved, and he and Tifa keep their little family in remembrance of the dead.
In this new dimension, it's like the apocalypse Cloud remembers was half-averted. Mako's still around, ShinRa's in business, and Tifa supposedly died years ago under Cloud's JENOVA-fueled rampage. The other problem? Everyone's alive, looking for answers, and this dimension is a little more different than it seems.
It's hard, taking out reactors while being hunted across the continent by the people who are apparently your soulmates. It's hard, and no one understands.

(Or: in a universe where Krypton took an extra thirty-odd years to implode, Kal-El was sent to Earth as an adult, in advance of the ship containing the only other surviving Kryptonians; and a quirk of Kryptonian law means negotiating refuge, potential resettlement, and an alliance with the Kryptonians in general is dependent on marriage between a Kryptonian and a human. Bruce did what it took to make sure that that human would be him, instead of some poor unprepared civilian—but his efforts to learn more about the aliens, what they want and why they're here, and how, if necessary, to kill them ... don't go the way he's expecting them to.)

In the chapter of Les Miserables titled "Forms Assumed by Suffering During Sleep," Jean Valjean writes a first person account of a surreal nightmare where he describes being buried alive in a town full of horrifying faceless people. It feels EXACTLY like an episode of the Magnus Archives.
So I have added a few introductory and ending paragraphs to reimagine the entire chapter as a Magnus Archives episode. You will enjoy this fic if you are a nerd.
