Summary
Joe squints a little. “So you were born in what, the 1060s?”
Nicky nods. “1069, I believe. I died during the first crusade. For the first time, anyway.”
“Wow,” Joe says. “You are very well preserved.”
Joe's a millennial with student loan debt, a dead-end career as a personal trainer, and a lumpy futon for a bed. He's also the new immortal.

Summary
Come down slowly, Joe thinks hysterically as he descends the ladder right into the arms of this man who, very unfortunately, smells incredibly good, just a hint of sandalwood on his skin, and feels incredibly firm and comforting against Joe as he makes sure the ladder doesn’t break while Joe’s still on it. Come down slowly, he thinks, and imagines, against his better judgment, coming down slowly next to this man in bed.
If only his opinions on literature weren’t so wrong.
(In which Joe is accidentally seduced into happiness by Schrödinger's hipster.)

Summary
“We cannot let anyone see us die. We cannot let them see us heal. We must get out of this city, away from them. If they catch you, they will kill you. If they see what you are…it will go as badly for you as it would for me. Neither of us is safe with them, you understand? You need me to help you get past them, away from this place. I need you to help me out there, in the desert, until we reach a port. Do you understand? We are the same. We must get out.”
He stopped; he was not sure how to make himself any clearer, and the Saracen was not evidently interested in conveying anything other than his loathing. Nicolò waited, and after a long, uncomfortable moment, the Saracen finally responded. He spat an incomprehensible sentence in Arabic, heavy with disdain, and thrust his bound hands forward. A demand to be released? That would make sense. Nicolò hesitated.
“Do you understand me?” he pressed, repeating his gestures. “We are the same. We go together? Away from here? Both of us?”
The Saracen repeated also; his Arabic phrase, and the twisting of his wrists against their bindings. Nicolò nodded, and crouched before him.“I am going to free you,” he said. “Please help me.”

Summary
“Okay, I’m going to need your contact information and I’ll have to ask a few questions about what it is you’ll be needing during your rut. Is that alright?”
“Yes, yes, of course,” Nicky says, aware that he’s panicking and it reads in his tone. “Before you accept my booking, you need to—“
“It will be just fine,” Joe says, smooth and professional. “Why don’t we start with your name?”
“That’s just it,” Nicky says miserably. “It’s Nicolò di Genova.”
There’s a long pause. “Oh,” Joe says.
He hasn’t hung up, which is what Nicky was expecting, so he uses the silence to start apologizing.
In which both Joe and Nicky struggle to fit into a world where your cycle determines so much about your romantic prospects when neither of them have typical cycles or even know if they want that kind of romantic relationship. In which Joe co-runs a center where people with atypical heat and rut cycles can come and receive the help they need. In which Nicky really wishes he hadn't written a series of very stupid letters to the editor of the local paper back when he was pretending he didn't need the kind of help Joe was offering.

Summary
The worst part is that Nicky knows he's too old for this shit. A summer romance—that all-consuming passion crashing over you like a tidal wave and lasting about as long—is one thing for a teenager. But he's much closer to thirty than twenty at this point. He should damn well know better.
Yet here he is, flat on his back in the late morning sunlight, his shoulders splayed halfway off the side of the bed, sheets rumpled beneath him and Joe's beard rough against the skin of his inner thighs, and it's the closest to God that Nicky has ever felt.
(Modern!AU. Nicky's a bartender in Cinque Terre, Joe's a tourist just passing through, they fall in love. Because of course they do.)

Summary
The resort stretches far down the coast in either direction. Little square cabins on raised foundations, all a merry brown with pine green roofs and shutters, screen doors and barbecues for warmer months, stone chimneys and stacked wood piles for cooler. On either side of the path, tall grasses sway, and there’s sand underfoot blown in from the beach. He has to be careful where he puts his boots, rounded stones here and there. In the distance, reaching into the ocean, huge rocky blocks of unforgiving granite, covered in lichen and dried seaweed and barnacles. The bare trees that dare grow close to the surf stand out like dark scratches against sheets of clouds overhead.
And so windy.
Nicky takes a vacation.

Summary
'I've been pulling at it all day, is it my hair that makes me look like I'm on something?' he pauses, rethinks. 'Something other than academic stress.'
A little light of understanding turns on behind Nicky's eyes, loosening his frown. He gives Joe a tiny hint of a smile, and makes a little show of looking him up and down.
'Sure,' he says, 'Let's say it's the hair.'
Joe's stressed, and looking to relax. Nicky would love to help him do that.

Summary
They sit in the quiet half-dark, too lazy to turn on the light. A lone sunbeam illuminates Nicky's eye, his nose.
'I don't know about changing the world,' Joe says finally. 'That sounds like I want to do it all by myself. I just want to do my bit. So we can all be a bit happier tomorrow than we are today.'
'You and me, too?'
For a moment, Joe thinks this might turn into the talk he had been giving Nicky, about the importance of taking breaks. But Nicky is quiet after that, squinting into the sun, and suddenly, Joe isn't quite so sure what to reply.
'I hope so,' he says finally. 'I hope so.'
When the world grinds to a halt around them, Joe and Nicky are forced to navigate who they are (and who they are to each other) from the confines of a flat in Northern Italy.
A little love story about the things that are important in life.

Summary
Onstage, the drums and guitars steamroll to a crashing crescendo, and Joe belts out a final note, bringing the song to a thunderous, impressive close. In the screaming aftermath, chest beading with sweat and heaving, Joe lets the mic fall from his mouth, grinning wildly, eyes alight, so beautiful and untouchable that Nicky’s stomach tightens.
“Oh, Andy,” he says, resigned to his fate.
She taps her bottle to his arm, just says, “You’re welcome.”

Summary
His back is to the door when Nicky first fully sees him.
“Joe,” Nicky breathes.
“What do you think?” Joe asks, not daring to turn around.
In an instant, Nicky’s warm body collides with Joe’s back, sending goosebumps all down his exposed skin; Nicky’s mouth attaches to his neck, pressing hungry, gentle kisses to the space between where his hair ends and where the flimsy spaghetti strap of the silky negligee he’s wearing strains to fit around his shoulder.

Summary
"Hey," Joe says. "You okay?"
"Sure. Yeah." Nicky nods, his gaze is a little distant at first, but then he focuses on Joe. "Just surprised, that's all. Hell, it wouldn't be a wedding without some drama, right?" His grin is very 'Nicky,' but it doesn't quite reach his eyes. "Sadly, this drama probably won't involve blowjobs in a parking lot. Which isn't to say we can't do that for fun." He looks around the room, seeming to notice for the first time where Joe is sitting. He's trying so hard to sweep this all under the rug. "You know, the last time you were in that chair—"
"Nicky." Joe squeezes his shoulder. By now, he recognizes deflection in Nicky's tone, in his eyes. "Now we ask," he says and watches the false cheer drop from Nicky's face. "So I'm asking. Are you okay?"
For a long time, Nicky stares at the wall just past Joe's shoulder. He's still looking at it when Joe slides onto the bed next to him and takes his hand. There's no rush; he can wait.

Summary
Nicky laughs as Joe noses into his neck. “You’ll give me the wrong idea,” Nicky says. They’ve done this before enough times that Joe knows, theoretically, to steer clear of Nicky’s neck; it’s a hotspot for him and intentionally letting his beard scrape along sensitive skin is a little mean.
“What if it’s not the wrong idea?” Joe says.
Nicky pulls away to study him. “What do you mean?” he asks.
Joe shrugs. “What’s a little fun between friends? I don’t want to be alone tonight, and I don’t want to put myself through meeting someone new. Plus, you’ve been a very good friend, and you deserve to be rewarded for it.”

‘You can have any colour you like,’ says Yusuf, two inches from his ear. Nicolò twitches, flinching back from him and squinting at him in the weak light of the moon through the shutters.

Summary
"I'm certain this is not what you wanted from a marriage any more than I did."
For a second, Joe is on the receiving end of the most intense stare he's ever seen. He almost dares to hope for an argument, something unexpected, then his husband blinks, and he's back to being that blank-faced stranger Joe first met earlier that day. "On the contrary. An advantageous match is all a prince should ever want."
It was too much to hope that Nicolò might possess wit or charm that he felt free to express behind closed doors. Joe tries to hide a sigh. On the bright side, he thinks, at least it's forever.

Joe has been back home for less than a week when he sees Nicky in the cereal aisle of the local supermarket.
Nicky, who he hasn’t heard from in six months.
Nicky, who told Joe between lingering kisses that he’d call when he came to port, as he’s done every time he’s set off for the last ten years, so they could see each other again.
Nicky, who Joe’s been irretrievably in love with since he was seventeen.
Nicky who is leaning on a cane clutched in his right hand.

Summary
When Nicky was twenty-two, he was in love. With the world, yes, and with his own life, with the way having an Interrail Pass and some money in his pocket made him feel that anything was possible. But most of all, with Joe. With him, love was effortless. They laughed easily, they traveled together well, and they fucked like gods.
Nile never knew that version of him, the Nicky so in love that he stole Joe's t-shirt and stuffed it in his backpack, thinking he could wear it to bed and imagine Joe was still holding him. By the time he met her, Nicky had not only stopped sleeping in that shirt, he'd long-since shoved it in the back of his bottom drawer behind a spare blanket. After that, he could almost pretend it never existed.
