Summary
Billy survives the Mindflayer's attack. He finds that carrying on with his life as if nothing has happened seems impossible. Going through the motions of the life he now lives, Billy returns to High School to finish up his final year. There, he meets someone who understands him in ways he could never imagine.
Vance Hopper moves to Hawkins shortly after he escapes the clutches of the infamous serial killer nicknamed "The Grabber". His mother thinks they should start over somewhere new, so she moves him out to live with her brother Jim Hopper. Soon after moving, he meets Billy Hargrove and they quickly form a powerful friendship.
Neither of them knows how similar their situations are, but they are drawn to one another nonetheless, as if it were fate. Will they be able to help one another heal from the suffering they endured?

Billy ends up grounded after an argument with Hopper but despite this, Steve manages to convince him to sneak out and spend the evening with him. While their time together starts off pleasantly, they run into Neil Hargrove. After seeing Billy behaving in a romantic manner with another male, Neil is overcome with rage. As a result, Billy is severely injured.

After surviving the night the mall was burned to the ground, Billy attempts to return to his life without allowing the events that took place that summer to hinder him. However, many individuals within the town label him a murderer, believing that he was the one to set fire to the mall. Given the guilt he felt, Billy didn’t have the nerve to defend himself. He was shunned by everyone who hadn’t been involved in what actually occurred. Billy was fine with just keeping his head down until he finished school, however after running into Chrissy Cunningham, his plans changed. Despite having a boyfriend, it seemed that she needed someone to rely on. Billy soon finds that he wants to be that person for her.
