Grace dumps him at the door. Kisses his cheek. Tells him to say hi to Daniel. Races out of the farm like she’s the one in Vegas. He would give her a penalty for the way she bumps the bins ever so slightly.
He will give her DOTD. Will make Daniel text her the joke, after. Knows Grace will sends emoji kisses and the dot dot dots all mothers use.
The first thing he hears from Daniel’s real voice since September is a curse, a what the fuck mom loud and whispered because why would Grace leave the groceries on Daniel’s front step without saying hi. Max will though, has Grace’s words in his mouth.
Max is the groceries. Half a eaten chocolate bar without nuts and an empty water bottle he hasn't left in Grace’s car. He is polite.

He makes the decision halfway through November. Signs a dotted line during their short break. Stops sending his Red Bull assigned clothes to the pressing down the road and packs a nondescript bag full of his own clothes. Grabs a jumper just for Daniel, even if Max knows he will be sweating in Australia. Sends an email and a wire transfer. The email chain counts 43 emails between him and his team. The last email is from them, confirming it’s in motion. Confirming he doesn’t need to be in Las Vegas if he doesn’t want to.
He doesn’t. Las Vegas will have a Daniel-shaped hole too and Max will hoard him, won’t let them have a piece of him anymore.

But he needs it, and Jim doesn't have time for more chit chat "To rent it. A few days at most, I need it for, uh, creative purposes."
Jonsthan stays silent, mouth agape as Jim readjusts his jacket in a rare show of anxiety, but look, he does need it, he has plans, ideas, things to concretise.

Jim didn't think he would see him again, the bond between them shut, and his senses never picking up traces of him, an empty hole in his gut that hurt more than the punches pulled on the way to the new prison.
He can't process the primal joy at seeing Antonov again, the relief that drowns him briefly, like water in his lungs, before Antonov punches him, and Jim feels like Antonov's pain is the one blooming between them, broken fingers and opened knuckles against the strong corner of his jaw.
"What the —" he grunts, and Antonov is breathless, sweat around his eyes like tears and Jim wildly thinks the man has never looked that pretty.
