“Let me hold her,” Sam demanded after a moment. Handing her over, John watched as Sam scratched her on her head, then took one of her paws and ran his thumb over the underside, feeling the soft toe beans. The cat started purring even louder.
Sam’s expression softened, some of the harsh lines on his face disappearing, and that’s when John knew the little thing had won Sam over.

When he complains of the pain to his mother, she does not reassure him, does not hug him. She opens her mouth to start speaking, but is cut off when it suddenly starts pouring outside. Frowning at the worsening weather, she gathers her bearings and quotes what is undoubtedly a passage from the Bible, “We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope. Take lesson from that, John. This will only make you a better Christian in the eyes of God.”
And John is afraid suddenly of what it means that he does not rejoice in his pain. That he hates it. Maybe he is weak, in the end.

During one of those visits in Kolín, Sam asks him whether he would like to stay. John answers that he would like nothing else more. But he also knows he shouldn’t be selfish, shouldn’t be a burden, shouldn’t dream and demand too much. Terrible things happen to those who demand more of the world then world is content to give.
Sam tells him that being selfish is not always terrible. That sometimes it is necessary to stay sane.

He holds onto the doorframe, because he already knows, because if John was fine, he would have sent a letter for Samuel not to worry, and then he would have come himself, expression bashful. Samuel would have scolded him for not being careful enough and they would have dinner together, their legs touching under the table.
But this is Henry. And he says, “We rode out to the place where they last saw him, searched the nearby forests, but there wasn’t anything. He wasn’t anywhere. I’m sorry.”
