He was never supposed to become his shadow, his knife, his backbone. Neil Josten was never supposed to be the person that Andrew looks for first when he enters the room, or the person he would take with him when he left. Neil was never supposed to be the first person who could block demons that Andrew never spoke of, he wasn’t supposed to be the person who touched him and made his soul settle instead of fight. He wasn’t supposed to become the person, for that the moment Andrew had lost him - no matter how short of time - that it felt like someone had come and taken his arm and lung.
Andrew fucking hated it.

Summary
Andrew has always been the one others look to for protection, for saving, for safety. He’s made his share of deals, wielded knives for others, fought battles that weren’t his to fight. Having someone else do the same for him, to want to do the same for him, is a disturbing and frightening prospect. But maybe, just maybe, it doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

Intimacy is a difficult topic for both of them, but for Neil it’s just something unfamiliar that leaves him overwhelmed or with an unpleasant ache in his chest at its worst.
For Andrew on the other hand, it’s a threatening concept, leaving him all vulnerable and helpless as it tears open old wounds and memories too horrible to remember.

The first time Henry sees it happen, he knows instantly that it is not the first time it has ever happened. They’re sitting in the living room of the brownstone, the two of them surrounded by their favorite people in the world, a night of board games long abandoned in favor of mocking the eighth season of Game of Thrones.
“God, don’t you have an off switch?” June groans, laughing as she chucks a piece of popcorn in Alex’s direction while he rambles passionately about the international legal implications of the Red Wedding. Nora cackles. “Whatever you do to thank Henry for putting up with you, it’s not nearly enough. Jesus, I can’t believe he put a ring on your loud mouth.”
Or: Alex is fine. Really, he’s fine — he just wants Henry to stay, even if Alex is too much. Henry just wants his husband back.
