They knew their final injuries carried over, but they didn't think something like this was possible. They didn't think the Warden's shriek could do this type of damage.

Summary
It's a habit of Grian's, one which multiple people have picked up on. After all, gnawing on ghost peppers without a reaction is certain to elicit some responses from people around him. Despite the number of spices they add to his food, or if Zedaph designs an artificial super hot pepper for him to eat, Grian remains completely calm and unaffected. The heat that can burn a normal person doesn't even manage to flush his cheeks red, and not a single tear rolls down his cheeks. The Hermits take this as a challenge.
Or, birds can’t taste capsaicin and the Hermits forget this. They decide it’s a good idea to try to get a bird to react to spice and beat him. It doesn’t go well for them. Grian uses this to mess with their heads.
