Summary
Dr. Ryland Grace was enjoying his day off.
It was still morning, so he was sipping his cup of coffee as he sat in one of his chairs, wrapped in his colorful quilt. He held a tablet in one hand, using it to read one of the thousands of books available to him. It was quiet in his home- peaceful and cozy, just the way he liked it. He expected to be alone most of the day, since Rocky mentioned having things to do today. He wasn’t sure what, but it’s not like Grace knew every single thing Rocky got up to.
Rocky had a job, after all.
Of course, that wasn’t to say that Grace didn’t. Of course he did. He was teaching the next generation of Science Eridians(tm), and he couldn’t be more proud. They were quick learners, thanks to the Eridian’s near-photographic memory. He should probably spend some time coming up with his lesson plan for his next class.
One more chapter, then he would do his lesson planning. He was too cozy to move.
Alas, the universe rarely let him stick to his plans.

Apparently this was all the jostling that the man needed to wake back up. He gnashed his teeth, growling, “Who are you? Where’s Ava!”
Grace tried to pull backwards but the man grabbed his shirt, “Stratt? She’s not here!”
The man stilled somewhat, “What?” He asked.
Grace regained his balance, “Eva Stratt. It’s her mission, right? She’s not here. I’m Ryland Grace, I’m here to help you.”

Just before he dies to the Blood Ocean, Simon appears in the Hail Mary's airlock while Grace is holding his crew's funeral. The crew is back at the correct headcount with a scientist, an engineer, and a pilot, but none of them were originally meant to be on this ship, and Grace still hasn't gotten around to telling anyone it's a one-way trip for the humans. Grace counts his victories in unraveled scientific mysteries, while Simon counts his in getting Grace to swear.

At least I still have coffee.
I sit up too fast, though, and end up seeing spots. It takes me a couple seconds for my brain to stop feeling like TV static. The first time that happened, Rocky freaked out. But it's been happening for months now, since I'm eating less and tired far more often, and both of us have just sort of gotten used to it. I wonder if it'd be worse or better in zero-g.

Grace voices shakes while he announces his findings to Rocky. He doesn't know why the discovery fills him with so much dread. 98-59 was a red dwarf to begin with – nothing more than a light snack to the Astrophage. Still. Four planets in close orbit. One in the habitable zone. And he doesn’t even believe in that goldilocks zone hogwash, so as far as he knows, that’s four planets missing their sun.
"Do you think-" he tries to swallow around the dry lump that had formed in his throat. "Do you think there was life? On those planets?"

Rocky and Grace rescue a human being trapped in a submarine on an alien planet. As it turns out, that is the easiest part.

They didn’t give him a clock, how would he know?!
They called the submarine the “Iron Lung”.
How lovely of a name. Definitely reassuring.

Summary
The side of the ship had finally been prised open, a rectangular sized opening carved on its flank to allow enough room for the Eridians to get in with their equipment and out with the human. The second it opened, though, a rush of something thick and viscous came pouring out – almost liquidlike, spilling through the mouth of the ship and pooling at the feet of the Eridians who had crowded around. There was so much of it; dripping through the welding in the iron, coating thickly on what little Grace could see of the flooring inside, flowing freely now the ship had been opened. When the Eridians lifted their appendages to move away from it, the liquid stuck and clung to them, heavy like molasses puddled at their feet.
“Rocky?”
“Eridians are saying it is blood, Grace. Thing from ship is blood - human."
Grace and Simon must learn to navigate their lives together on Erid, no matter how different they are.
