Kei blames the sunlight, and the way it gleams in Yamaguchi’s eyes, ever so open and earnest in a way that Kei has never managed himself to be. Molten brown turns into amber, the sunbeam bouncing in his iris like a kaleidoscope. It resembles the iridescent cuirass of the beatle Kei had on the cover of his first bugs’ book. He used to spend his afternoons alone, bending the book so the sunlight would bounce on it in all the right places, making the colours shine. That was, of course, before Tadashi came along.

during their third year, yamaguchi becomes captain, and kei becomes a pining mess with a never-ending headache.

He reads another paragraph, and Kei expects it this time. He hears, “I love you," and huffs a faint laugh through his nose. Tadashi is the light of his life, and Kei is insistent on always humoring him no matter what, even if he’s currently busy.
"I love you too, darling."
Three minutes pass and Kei’s read a page and some. "I love you."
Without missing a beat, “I love you too."
Kei reads another paragraph. "I love you"
Instantly, "I love you too."
This time a minute passes, a mere 60 seconds. "I love you."
"I love you too, ‘Dashi."

The man is the first to seem impressed by Ranpo's intelligence rather than angered by it. Soon after, Oda asks him to wait for his 'colleague' who might be in need of someone to help him with his work. After meeting the man, Ango, Ranpo finally feels like he has found people who understand him. Eventually, the young man agrees to work with Angoa and is exposed to the Port Mafia and some of the organization's more eccentric characters, including his psychotic 'half-brother', Dazai, and his equally insane counterpart, Chuuya. Will Ranpo be able to adjust to the dynamic new family, or will he again be cast out?

“I want to go home,” Ranpo whispers. Except he doesn’t have one of those anymore. Not really. Not without Fukuzawa. He feels the same as he did when he was fourteen years old, orphaned and alone and starving on the streets of Yokohama. He wants to go home, but home does not exist in the way it once did. Home is nothing but a memory.
“We can take you back to Yosano-sensei’s place,” Dazai offers.
Ranpo shakes their head. “I don’t want to bother her.”
“…Okay. But I know you don’t want to stay here either.”
“I don’t have anywhere else to go.” Ranpo rubs their eyes with the back of their hand. They wish they had their glasses. “I want to go home, but I can’t. I don’t know where that is anymore.”
for the first time since the decay of angels incident, ranpo attempts to spend the night at poe's house. it doesn't go as well as he'd hoped.

“We shouldn’t be drinking” is all Tecchou says. He earns a scoff from Jouno who pours – what Tecchou has noticed is Sake – into a glass and proceeds to drink it as if it were a shot.
“The commander does it” Jouno finally responds and his voice slightly on edge and a small smirk causing the corners of his mouth to rise a little. Tecchou can’t lie and say that this man isn’t gorgeous.
Tecchou sighs and sits down beside Jouno on the couch, pouring himself a glass “Yeah but that’s the commander, he’s different”.
“The only thing different about him is that he’s still salty about his ex-boyfriend”.
