A dead butler, an old manor house, things that go bump in the night and a Sherlock/John romance:
For an instant Sherlock regretted that they had a train to catch, but maybe it was better that they did, safer certainly. These evenings with John were never entirely relaxing. He always had to be one step ahead, to read every flicker of expression or gesture. The causal press of hips and shoulders as they sprawled amidst a chaos of papers, maps, mobile phones and cushions seemed to pass unnoticed. A slice of pizza lifted from John’s hand produced a scowl and a half-hearted rebuke. If he had attempted to lick away the sauce that clung in tomato smears to John’s knuckles and the corner of his mouth the reaction would have been explosive though.
Outrage. Apprehension. Even embarrassment. Sherlock could imagine it all in dreary detail. John didn’t. John wasn’t.
Not gay.

Ha, somehow I read this in 2014 and commented, then again in 2024 but have no recollection of it! This is a very well-written story. John and Sherlock's relationship develops in the middle of a case mystery, between one sentence and the next, and the author brilliantly manages to make it in character and touching, and for the casefic to make sense. Plus it takes place in a moody old estate, this is a really good fic that stands the test of time. Can't believe I've been reading this stuff for more than 10 years!!

It sounds like the open sky throwing wind against the boulders up on Baker, rattling the thin walls of the tent with the rushing force of the mountain.
I hum. I don’t believe him for a second – steppin’ out of his gleaming white Ford back in Signal with his best shirt on and his curls all combed lookin’ up at me like he just took a breath after five years of holding it.
I know because I did the same.

"This was truly marvelous. I'm not a poetry person, but gobbled up all your excepts. I especially appreciated the length of this story, which felt like it had the right depth and resolution. I was a bit afraid it was going to end when they came together in the Street attic, and honestly that would have been fine, but the continuation, the new books, Everything after that point was so satisfying. Summary
John Watson retired after an injury pulled him out of the 2010 Winter Olympics. He's resigned himself to living out his days sharpening skates in Catawissa, Pennsylvania, fighting with his drunk sister and watching his number of students dwindle away.
Sherlock Holmes was banned from competition for a doping violation he did not commit before the 2014 Winter Olympics. Ever since, he has whiled away his time on odd jobs as skater after skater fires him as a coach. He no longer dreams of proving his innocence and making his comeback.
As the story must go, their paths converge.

He doesn’t linger when he’s piecing Sherlock back together after a fight, even though he’s half-dressed and beautiful and right there.

"Sometimes I forget what good fanfiction writing is, and then I hit a fic like this, that is so well-written, so absorbing, so damn INSIGHTFUL and revealing of the characters, so filled with dramatic tension, it is breathtaking. I remember loving your work and I'm delighted to discover this absolute gem.
Some things that stood out - Harry's horror at seeing his adult self, that he thought himself rough and mean looking. Draco's tender love for child Harry. Prickly Andromeda. Aging Draco year by excruciating year. The contrast between Draco's expectations for himself and harsh reality. How hard-working both men were. The Imperius!Potion. Your depictions of young Harry and young Draco seemed really authentic."
