The Nanson boy was going home after this, for his own sake more than anything. He had a long walk there, and the rain might chill him to the bone, but he wouldn't be staying yet another night in Gunson's guest room. The boy had animals to tend to, and what few fallow fields he lived on.
Then, not long after the boy had disappeared out of the bar, a stranger entered. The door came open at his touch as if it ran away. The shadows grew longer, the candles dimmer, and Gunson felt a shiver run down his spine. The man was dressed in fine, yet drenched, rich man's attire. Fit for London or Liverpool, not for a bum village in the Cumbrian border to Scotland. There was no main road or reason to come here, unless you were related to a resident and forced to attend a wedding or christening.
The man moved with grace and in complete silence, Gunson could barely register that he moved until he was already at the counter. The man placed his right hand on the counter, and Gunson saw that his outer two fingers had long, sharp nails. Perfectly maintained and shaped to be symmetrically round and unassuming. These were not a working man's fingers, porcelain in both texture and hue.

He frantically scribbled question marks all over the aged paper, thinking not one person is normal."But hey, even though they're all deranged... A lot of them are caring, even though the ways they express it is strange. We're all sent here a day after our birthday, like something is trying to experiment on us. I don't know what to expect, but hopefully I get out of here with all limbs attached."
His right hand trembled writing the last words, DuoDuo knew it was unlikely for him to even escape given his breathing.
Even so, he still longed to see tomorrow; hopefully with less fear than what he felt now.
