Xie Lian bursts with a bout of knowing laughter at that, slapping his hands over his mouth when Hua Cheng sighs, dramatically forlorn, his shoulders dropping in dejection. “Gege’s not taking my story seriously.”
“I am! I swear it! Please, San Lang, do continue,” His Highness begs, reaching across the table to hold Hua Cheng’s hand, squeezing it in unnecessary apology as he gives him a bright and encouraging smile.
Satisfied, Hua Cheng settles back, taking Xie Lian’s hand with him, forcing his flustered husband to hastily and clumsily crawl over to his side of the table along with it.

Xie Lian blinked his eyes open. He'd been falling asleep, his body still so tired from everything it had been through in the depths of the cave.
“Hm?” How was he sitting? Xie Lian thought about it for a moment, and then he realised. Oh.
He was sitting with his back against the maple tree, his head tilted slightly backwards and to the side to expose his neck, the insides of his wrists turned upwards, resting on his thighs.
Xie Lian had trained himself to sit like that in the presence of vampires, so there was less chance of them pulling on and twisting his numb arms or hurting his neck.

Hua Cheng took a step towards the bed and leaned closer, his inky eyes studying him closely. After a moment he sighed and flopped on the bed next to him, a hand lazily reaching up to Xie Lian's head and scratching it gently.

A small lump rose up into his throat. Despite this, Xie Lian let out a chuckle.
“It doesn't really matter what I want. Wherever I might I go, and whatever I might do, I’d be recognized eventually. My reputation is… a bit of a curse following me.”
His fingers were digging absentmindedly into the backs of his arms. It hurt, but he didn’t let up. This always helped keep him focused and level whenever things were spiraling out of his control.
Hua Cheng was thoughtful, his long fingers drumming idly on the plush armrest.
“Gege… what if we could fix that?”
Xie Lian blinked at him in confusion. “What do you mean?”
Hua Cheng slowly sat forward, resting his elbows on his knees. He fixed Xie Lian with a surprisingly dastardly grin and Xie Lian’s stomach did an unexpected little flip.
"We might have to break a few laws to do it, but what if we can prove you were telling the truth? What if we can clear your name?"
