Summary
The Rumbling has destroyed half of the world, but, much to Annie’s dismay, not enough of her own past.
Around 9 months after the Rumbling, Annie is set to work for the refugee program in Cotta, an undamaged Marleyan city which, despite the recent tragedy, still exhibits the triumph of its decadent society, with its fake politeness and sheer horror at the very thought of violence and unseemliness (at least, in public).
Frustrated by the local politics and the endless bureaucracy, the combat skills she learned in childhood now completely useless, she feels agitated, inadequate, and unsatisfied, and would rather find a way to run away from it all; but as the summer reaches its peak, something from her past suddenly resurfaces, and there she is urged to confront everything about her life: her actions, her relationships, and most of all, the truth to the story of her monstrous nature.
