Shepard hated the way her thoughts muddled when she pondered her identity. But as much as she hated it, she couldn’t trust the idea that she was herself at all. That person died that day when the collectors destroyed the SR1 for all she knew. She could lie to herself over and over again, reminding herself that she was the same person she'd always been.. but she would never know the truth.
The doubt crawled through her subconscious like corroded veins, it told her that she was a ghost of a woman who meant something to the galaxy, it whispered that she was a cheap copy of the person the world needed her to be.. Wouldn’t it be better to leave the fate of everything to someone else? Someone more like the person that he loved? She almost wished Kaidan still doubted her, things would be so much easier if he did. She took his heart with greedy grabbing hands when she knew she had no right to claim it. She took it without caring that she could not be the person he thought he loved.
Shepard felt like she had to live up to this impossible image of the person he cared for. She owed him that. She wanted to be that person so badly that it hurt.
