Summary
The screen is instantly filled with scenes of devastation. Smoke billowing from buildings, huge cracks in the road, the sound of people screaming and children crying. It looks like something from a warzone as the broadcaster explains that a large earthquake had occurred a short while ago.
“Fortunately the epicentre was in a remote region,” the newscaster explains as a map appears on the screen. “The nearest village was several miles away, and while there has been significant damage and some serious injuries, it’s not believed to have caused any loss of life.”
Wu Xie frowns. The area highlighted on the map looks familiar, but he can’t say why. It’s nowhere he’s ever been before.
“Wu Xie,” Pangzi says softly, his eyes still fixed on the TV screen. “Xiaoge…”

He pulls out his knife. He’s definitely more accurate with this thanks to his training with Hei Xiazi, but the blade is short, which means the bats need to get a lot closer before he even stands a chance of striking one of them.
Beside him, another bat drops, its head sliced neatly from its body thanks to Xiaoge’s sword. The bats are definitely thinning in number, thanks mostly to Xiaoge, but there are still far too many of them.

It’s not a very complex design, but Xiaoge isn’t really one for ostentation. What he likes are things that are practical and functional, which this very much is.
“He sleeps on a tree branch,” Pangzi points out. “Of course he’ll like it. This is a mansion compared to that.”

The mark on his wrist is a tattoo. It’s small, only about the size of a fingernail, but it stands out stark on his pale skin. It’s writing, cleanly printed and easy to read. Two characters making up the word ‘mine’, which he thinks is a strange choice for a tattoo. Did someone else design it to mark him as their own? Or was it his choice, laying claim to someone or something he has now forgotten?

Wu Xie takes a breath to steady himself, then leans down and brushes his lips over Xiaoge’s. Then he kisses him more firmly, just so the curse isn’t in any doubt about whether this is an actual kiss or not. He pulls back and waits.
Xiaoge doesn’t wake up.

Wu Xie blinks at him and raises his glass to take a drink while he tries to figure out what’s happening. There aren’t that many members of the Zhang family that his uncle has had dealings with. Xiaoge would have mentioned something if he’d entered into some sort of arrangement with his uncle. Perhaps his Ershu has made some sort of business deal with Zhang Rishan.

Zhu Yilong almost wants to cry because Qin Hao understands. He’s worn the shroud of Wu Xie for months, has let him inhabit every part of him. He’s not sure anyone else gets it the way Qin Hao does. Even Sanshu, who wrote the books and created these characters, doesn’t seem to get it. Or rather he doesn’t seem to care the way Zhu Yilong does. It’s already getting to the point where Sanshu is avoiding his calls when Zhu Yilong wants to ask about some gap in the novels that he thinks will give him a better understanding of the character.
