Zoey froze.
The satin fabric of a business suit pressed roughly against her skin; the sharp weight of an elbow dug into her shoulder; the fist in Zoey's hair gripped tight, a searing, relentless pull.
What she noticed most of all, though, were the fangs.
"Are you done?" Celine's voice was clipped, sharp as a blade and twice as cold, just like her daughter. "Or do you need a firmer hand?"
Just like her daughter, she smelled extra sweet.

"But there are usually only helicopters on the roof when there is a really bad trauma," Mira points out.
The three look at each other, and as if they all had the same epiphany at the same time, start running towards the elevator. Zoey falls on her face, and then gets right back up again. She hears Mira giggle in her ear, and now Zoey knows she absolutely cannot lose another case to Kang Mira.

“Fuck off,” Rumi snaps, pushing away across the ice.
Mira follows.
She skates backwards with long, deliberate strides, feet crossing cleanly as she keeps pace, never giving Rumi the space she’s attempting to create. “Not getting away that easily, princess.”
Rumi snaps her head back to Mira, eyes ablaze. “Don’t even–” She cuts herself off with a sharp sigh, flipping a single finger in her direction. Mira just laughs.
Why was winding Rumi up so intoxicating? Mira doesn’t know. Or rather, she doesn’t care enough to find out.

She dug her spikes into the dirt, the sliding mit wrapped tight on her right hand. The left hander on the mound stared her down from her set position. A pair of sharp brown eyes met hers, a set she remembered fondly as a teammate now as the competition.

The challenge was issued. Rumi leaned into her right foot, waiting for the pitcher to start her motion. She saw the front foot lift and took off towards the second base bag.
