Summary
Alois has been a servant of the Trancy household for...well, actually, thinking about the year count makes him feel sick to his stomach.
Still, ever since his brother died, this wretched existence is the only life he's known. Dress up, put on a bright smile, and try to please their disturbed Lord. He's only 11. Now, it's a terrible life, but he's adapted to it. That's just how things are. The other boys may hate him (even though they depend on him more than they want to admit), but the Lord loves him. Being the Lord's 'favorite' is better than being another orphan on the side of the road, isn't it?
However, through the fog of his own rapidly deteriorating mind, Alois hears a rumor that the Lord has replaced him with another, shinier toy: a sacrificial lamb, shrouded in mystery, rumored for wealth, and bearing the mark of the devil in one of his dark blue eyes. And as much as Alois hates to admit it, he's desperately, despairingly lonely here...perhaps he could extend a hand of friendship to this boy, and, together, they could claw their way out of this hell.
Or, they'll both find themselves dead, tangled like the moths in the webs of a spider.

Summary
