It seems the guards didn’t realize that their “jokes” would affect his body, as well, because when the Princess and whom he assumed to be some bodyguard of her’s came to his cell, asking for help from him to decipher a scroll, he was told to stand. Before he could even try to read the scroll, his vision swam black, and his head hit the ground.
_________________________Or, I thought it was stupid that they put Varian in the same cell as another terrorist, so I put him elsewhere! And Rapunzel is smart enough to ask him for help :3
