"Varian, can I ask you, did you or did you not help in conspiring against the king and queen of Corona?" Eugene asks, every nerve in his body feeling anxious.
"Uhm..." Varian scratches the side of his head, squinting his eyes as he thinks deeply. "Yeah, I guess... It sounds bad when you put it that way."
"It is bad." The man briefly reprimands before sighing. "You're- really not helping case... Do you have anything else to say to that?"
"Well it didn't sound bad when Andrew mentioned it... I thought we were just taking back what had belonged to the Saporians first." He picked at the threads on his clothing mindlessly. "I mean, I told him we shouldn't hurt people to do it, but I don't think he agreed."
"No?" Eugene asked, stopping himself from prodding too much farther. He's here to do his job, he needs to shove his concern aside.
"No." Varian says simply, eyeing the sandwich again. "Will we be done soon?"

Varian could only watch for a second before Eugene reached out to brush his fingers against the intact skin near the bleeding - he averted his gaze with a thick swallow. “You really did a number on yourself, huh?”

“Kid I am always fancy enough,” Eugene said, sounding almost offended. Varian rolled his eyes with a grin. “However, as captain of the guard, I have the ability to… dress up a little.” He stepped out into view and Varian froze.
It wasn’t that he was surprised - he had suspected this was why they had come down here in the first place. It was more the sudden wave of memories and emotions that seeing Eugene in the guard uniform brought back.

Summary
Eugene's been a hunter for most of his life, and he's been working this particular case—some sort of restless spirit—for a few days now. He's hit a standstill, unable to figure out who the ghost is or why they're attacking.
His unexpected (and frankly, kind of unwanted) breakthrough comes in the form of Varian, a runaway full of secrets and covered in scars who invites himself along on Eugene's hunt, despite Eugene's best efforts to keep him safely out of the way.

The worst part about it was that Eugene should have known better. He had been so careful in a way that he had hoped was not obvious, every sweeping movement made to forecast his intent before he did anything at all. Any hug, any high five, even a step towards Varian had to be well forecasted less he spook the boy.
Yet when he wants to express his pride for a invention well made, Eugene moves too quickly and accidentally causes Varian to panic and Eugene has to battle between keeping Varian safe and giving Varian the space he needs.
