“I have to go to a wedding,” he says, voice tight. Eddie’s eyebrows scrunch in confusion. That’s it?
“You love weddings.”
“Not this one. It’s in Pennsylvania. With my mom and dad. For a whole week,” he says, frustration evident in his tone.
Well that makes a lot more sense. Buck at home for a whole week? Brutal.
“Maddie, Chim and Jee are going, right?” Eddie asks.
Buck nods jerkily. “Mmhm. They are. I-It’s just that my parents are expecting me to bring someone and when I don’t, because who the fuck would I ask to suffer for a week for me, they’re going to make comments about how I am going to be alone forever and it-it’s just already on my nerves and I still have nearly three weeks before I even have to go,” he rushes out, abandoning his coffee on the table as he paces back and forth in the kitchen.
“I’ll come with you,” Eddie offers. He blinks – he hadn’t exactly thought that one through, but he doesn’t regret it, doesn’t want to take it back. Buck freezes where he’s at, body still as a statue as his head whips to look at Eddie.

“Okay,” Eddie's voice came out small and weak and it made Buck’s heart pang, but the reassuring throbbing under his thumb helped ground him.

“It wasn’t until I was in the ambulance with you, after the ladder truck, that it stopped. Your heart monitor was beeping and the entire time I thought it was going to stop. I had my thumb on your pulse the whole ride.” Dad laughs sadly. “Yeah, we were holding hands, Buck.”

As far as the public is concerned, Hawks is this friendly, sunshine, effective hero – but every pro who's worked with him knows that he's not. He's a barely contained, could easily go too far, apex predator whose heroic heart is the only thing keeping him on the right side of the law.
Hawks does his best to be good, well behaved, and to avoid scaring the public – yet, people only like him until they get to know him. Which has been lonely but fine, for the most part.
It becomes not fine when he meets Touya and wants to get closer to him but has no idea how without hurting him.
What he doesn’t realize is that Touya doesn’t fear him – he loves everything about Hawks.
